Need tar but don’t fancy dying in the swamp every ten minutes? Tar is a tier-3 resource found in the Cursed Swamps – you’ll harvest it from Tarwood Trees once you can safely reach that biome and wield an Iron axe or better. This guide shows where to find Tarwood Trees, how to prepare and efficient farming routes so you can gather enough Tar for tarred planks, tarred fabric and ship upgrades without wasting time.
Cursed Swamps Biome
Tar is a tier 3 resource and to be able to obtain Tar, you need to progress the main questline to the Cursed Swamps biome. You can progress to cursed swamps after defeating the Foothills Boss – Israel Hands.

Tarwood Tree
Once you’re in the swamps, look for trees that are greenish as shown in the above picture. Chop these trees down and you’ll get Tar resources along with some wood. You don’t need to dive deep into the swamps to find tarwood trees, most of the time you can find these tarwood trees near the swamp’s borders, navigate along the coast of the swamps and you can find some tarwood trees.
Uses for Tar
Tar can be used to craft resources like Tarred Planks and Tarred Fabric, which are essential for building new ship models like Brig or Frigate for mid and late game.
