The Grounded 2 update “Into the Abyss” introduces a unique and exciting way to build your base underwater. There is a wide variety of items you can use to build an underwater home, such as walls, crafting stations, beds, and others. Nonetheless, certain prerequisites must be met in order to build. In this guide, we will show you how to unlock underwater buildings in Grounded 2 and what you need to set up your underwater base.
How To Unlock Building On The Water

If you want to build anything at the surface of the water, then you need the Buoyant Foundations. In order to unlock them, go to the Skull Pond and grab the chip that is lying on the bridge there. Then, bring the chip to the Ranger Station and use it to unlock the recipe for Buoyant Foundations. It costs 2,500 Raw Science.
How to Breathe Underwater
It’s really fun to build underwater, but you will have to find a solution to keep yourself provided with oxygen. The best item you can get is the Bubble Maker. You just need to approach it, and it will provide you with oxygen and allow you to stay in the water for longer periods of time. The Bubble Maker is unlocked through Horsetails research. Another good item is an Underwater Bed. It requires materials such as Cattail Fluff and can be researched to unlock the recipe.
How To Build a Buoyant Foundation

The first step in building any structure is to make the foundation. The Buoyant Foundation requires 3x Eelgrass Strands, 2x Silk Rope, 2x Blueberry Leather, and 3x Cattail Fluff. To farm most tools in the new update, you need to upgrade all Omni tools to level 3, especially the Omni Clippers. That way, you can cut down Cattail Fluff deep in the waters.
How to Start Building On Water
Underwater building comes with special blocks, and once you are in the water, go to your building inventory, and you will find all the necessary items, including an underwater crafting table and other structures from the ocean. You can turn your underwater base into a fully functional home by adding several useful stations. The Marine Workbench is particularly useful. You can unlock it by researching:
- 3x Eelgrass
- 2x Wax
- 2x Koi Scales
- 2x Sunken Bones
Once you unlock it, you will be able to place it in your underwater base and craft like any other crafting station. Other crafting stations can also be placed, like a Smithing Station and Glue Masher.
The new Pressure Cooker is another useful addition for your underwater base. This machine allows you to cook various meals, including some underwater recipes. You will be able to cook both underwater and regular meals using the machine.
