The Focus in the Monastery Ruins is one of the key quests during the events of Chapter 3 in Gothic 1 Remake. It’s a mixture of combat, exploration and clever use of magical abilities. This guide will show you how to get inside the ruins despite the locked gate, how to handle snappers in the courtyard and where to get the Transform into Meatbug scroll. You’ll also learn what dangers you can encounter while obtaining the Focus Stone.
Monastery Ruins Location
Make your way to the marked location shown on the above map image which is northeast of the Valley to reach the Monastery Ruins and meet Gorn near the ruins.
Meeting Gorn
You’ll find Gorn along the path to the Monastery Ruins, speak with him and you’ll learn that the ruins are swarming with snapper creatures. He insists on finding an alternative way inside the ruins and asks you to follow him to the cave below the ruins.
Meatbug Transformation Scroll
Follow Gorn to the cave under the ruins and you’ll reach a chamber inside the cave where monks used to live before. The chamber contains a chest which hides the Transform into Meatbug scroll – collect it and return to the main entrance of the ruins.
Tip to Clear Snappers
Outside the ruins, you can let Gorn draw the aggro from snappers, but there will be many more snappers inside the ruins and Gorn won’t be able to help you until you let him in by opening the gates, which can prove challenging given the snappers. Instead, use your ranged weapons and shoot them through the grills at the main entrance. Clear as many snappers as possible before heading inside the ruins so that you’re less likely to be overwhelmed by them.
Entering the Ruins
There’s a small opening near the bottom of the wall to the left of the main gate. But the opening is too small for us to crouch our way in, this is where our magical abilities and transformation scrolls come into play.
Equip the meatbug transformation scroll that you found at the monk’s chamber in the cave below the ruins and transform into a meatbug. Then you pass through the opening and follow the path inside the ruins, once inside look for a safe spot and transform back into your human form.
Opening the Gates
Once inside, clear the remaining snappers and return to the main entrance to open them and let Gorn inside the ruins to continue the quest.
Finding the Focus Stone
After letting Gorn inside, head through the doorway at the end of the corridor to the right side of the ruins, this will take you through the broken section of the ruins to reach the above level.
Upon reaching the upper level, walk straight to the end of the corridor to reach a cave’s entrance as shown in the above image and head inside the cave.
After you enter the cave, you’ll be presented with two routes – go through the left path. Throughout the navigation of the cave you’ll encounter multiple snappers.
Shadow Beast
At a certain point of travelling through the cave, you’ll notice some mushrooms. Make sure to save the game before you go beyond this point and get ready for combat because a Shadow Beast is waiting for you beyond this point.
Obtaining the Focus Stone
Once you defeat the Shadow Beast, leave the cave and you’ll come across the Focus Stone.
Regrouping with Gorn
After collecting the Focus Stone, turn around and head through the shown passage. You’ll reach the cellar of the ruins. Use the lever on the wall to lift the gate and climb the stairs to regroup with Gorn.
Juvenile Troll
Once you regroup with Gorn, you’ll run into a Juvenile Troll. Your next objective is to defeat it, so prepare yourself for yet another battle but this time Gorn will help you fight the troll.
Giving Focus to Saturas
Then head back to Saturas in the New Camp and give him the focus stone, thus completing the Focus in the Monastery Ruins quest.
