How to Catch a Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds for The Catch of a Lifetime Quest

Take on a heart-pumping underwater quest in Monster Hunter Wilds’ “The Catch of a Lifetime” quest, where Kanya dares you to catch a humongous “Whopper.” These aren’t the ordinary fish; they’re the behemoths of the waters of Scarlet Forest, which initiates a special and arduous fishing minigame. This article will guide you through how to find theseossal creatures, learning the skill of the catch, and taking your hard-gotten prizes. Prepare to challenge your fishing abilities and demonstrate you’re a genuine Monster Hunter pro angler.

Whopper Location in Monster Hunter Wilds

If you’re looking to start your hunt, the best place is at the top level of the Scarlet Forest, specifically in Area 17. Head past the ruins, and you’ll find deeper waters. The current conditions in the Scarlet Forest will affect what you see and how many big fish or “whoppers” you come across.

Keep an eye out for large splashes forming in circles, that’s a sign that fish are gathering, making it a prime spot to cast your line. It’s even easier to spot when you see Harpios circling above and diving into the water for a catch. Just to clarify, a “whopper” isn’t a single type of fish, it’s a general term in Monster Hunter Wilds for the bigger fish that trigger a special minigame to catch, like the Gajau, Speartuna, and Great Trevally.

How to Catch the Whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds

To start fishing, equip your fishing rod by holding the left bumper on your controller and selecting it from the item wheel. Then, cycle through your lures until you find the Starduster Rig,  the one Kanya gave you. When you spot a Whopper in the water and it bites, you’ll feel it pulling on your line. To prevent the line from getting too tight and snapping, move your line in the same direction the Whopper is pulling. Keep following its movements it’ll eventually get tired, and you’ll know it’s worn out when it stops for a moment.

Be ready, though Whoppers can leap out of the water to try and shake free. If this happens, quickly move your line in the direction it’s jumping and use the reel-in command to hold it steady. This will also wear the Whopper down over time. Once it stops struggling, start reeling it in using your directional controls, just like you would for a fast or slow reel. But stay alert! If the Whopper regains its strength, you’ll need to tire it out again before reeling it in further. Keep at it, and eventually, you’ll pull your catch onto solid ground right next to you.

If you’re having a hard time catching a Whopper, and you’ve unlocked decoration melding, there’s a trick that can help craft a level one Ranger jewel and slot it to get the Outdoorsman skill. This makes fishing a bit easier. Once you’ve reeled in your Whopper, take it back to Kanya. She’ll reward you with five Gunpowderfish Scales, five Honey, and 200 Guild Points.

Catch of a Lifetime Quest in Monster Hunter Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, Kanya gives you The Catch of a Lifetime quest, asking you to bring her one of these massive aquatic beasts. While this fish is easier to find compared to some of the others she wants you to track down, catching it is a bit trickier. Because Whoppers are so big, reeling them in involves a special minigame.
