The “Back in the Saddle” quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 picks up after the dramatic events of “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” where Lord Otto von Bergow’s timely intervention saved Sir Hans from the gallows. Now, Lord Otto entrusts Henry and Hans with a new and crucial diplomatic mission. The duo needs to embark on a journey to Nebakov Fortress where they will hold discussions with its commanding knight. Through this mission Henry gets involved with studying questionable activities and managing sophisticated social structures and may expose hidden deals while fostering his bond with Hans. Whether Henry uncovers the full truth or not, “Back in the Saddle” will advance the main narrative and offer players opportunities for exploration, combat, and role-playing.
Back in the Saddle Quest in KCD2
Sir Hans was spared from hanging thanks to Lord Otto von Bergow’s timely return during the “For Whom the Bell Tolls” quest. Now, Lord Otto has a new mission for Sir Hans and Henry, his squire. This diplomatic task, part of the main storyline, requires them to travel to Nebakov Fortress and negotiate with the knight in charge there.
Completing Saddle Quest in KCD2
The “Back in the Saddle” quest begins with Henry meeting Chamberlain Ulrich, who will escort him to a bed where he can sleep and save his progress. Henry’s chest is also conveniently located there, so it’s a good time to grab all his equipment.
Next, Henry needs to find Hired Hand Kabat to arrange for a horse. He has the option of retrieving Pebbles, his old horse, or choosing a new one named Herring, who has better stats. Kabat can also offer Henry some helpful riding tips. Don’t forget to equip your chosen horse with a saddle and bridle!
Now that Henry has his gear and a horse, the pressure is off. This is a great opportunity to explore the world, tackle some side quests, and generally catch up on anything you might have missed. There’s no need to rush.
Go to Nebakov
To start your way to Nebakov speak with Hans when you feel prepared for the quest progression. The dialogue screen contains a dialogue option which has a heart symbol next to it. The initial conversation opens the possibility of romantic development between Henry and Hans if you wish to follow that path. The player will experience a gentle interaction that strengthens their relationship following past tribulations through the alternative dialogue selection.
Once you’re both on horseback, Hans will chat with Henry, asking a few questions. Your answers don’t have any major impact on the story. He’ll also challenge you to a short race, but don’t worry about winning – Hans is scripted to come out on top.
After the race, Hans will have more questions. At this point, you can choose to fast-travel to Nebakov. However, the ride isn’t very long, and riding there manually is a good way to improve Henry’s Horsemanship skill.
Talk To Michael
Upon arriving at Nebakov, Hans and Sir Jaromir head off to discuss business, leaving Henry in the company of Adjutant Michael, who offers to show him around. Take a seat and share a meal with Michael. During the conversation, be sure to ask him about why his lord has so many horses – his answer will be useful later.
Michael will then challenge Henry to a friendly duel. This fight can be challenging, especially if you haven’t been focusing on combat skills, but losing has no negative consequences. Winning, on the other hand, will earn you a nice reward: some Rowel Spurs. Regardless of the outcome, Michael suggests that Henry visit Klara, who lives just down the slope, to heal any wounds. Even if you’re not hurt, it’s worth visiting Klara for the free healing, and it might also open up a chance for romance with her.
Get horse information
When Henry returns, he can find the horse handler, Pertzel, near the outer stables. If Henry’s stats and attire are good enough, and he passes the necessary checks, Pertzel might just spill the beans about the horses without any fuss.
If not, Henry will have to win a horse race against Pertzel to get the information. A good strategy for winning is to avoid sticking to the road and instead head down the slope to the right. On the way back, you can cut the same corner again to save time.
Winning the race earns Henry a Bravante Saddle. More importantly, Pertzel will now give Henry his version of the story about how the stables acquired so many horses. This story contradicts what Michael told Henry earlier. Combined with what the villagers have said, Henry now has plenty of reason to be very suspicious about what’s going on.
Talk to the Prisoner
To continue the investigation, return to the fortress, specifically the area where Henry spoke with Michael. Look for a guard standing by a door, with another door directly above it. Go to the upstairs door and proceed through another door to the room on the other side. Inside, you’ll find a key to the prisons sitting on a table. Be careful here – this area is restricted. Keep an eye out for guards, move quietly, and make sure to close any doors you open. Once you have the key, head back downstairs to the guard by the lower door. Talk to him, and hopefully, you’ll be able to convince him that Sir Jaromir needs his assistance (this will require a successful skill check). If you succeed, you can unlock the prison door and speak with the prisoner. After gathering all the information, including what the prisoner has to say, Henry has uncovered some truly disturbing news that he needs to share with Hans and Lord von Bergow.
Ride Back To Trosky
While waiting for Sir Hans to become available, you can either pass the time or take part in some optional activities. When Hans is ready, you’ll find him just outside the fortress, and he and Henry will fast-travel back to Trosky.
Once back in Trosky, you can choose to report to von Bergow immediately or take some time to rest and explore. Speaking with Otto von Bergow allows Henry to share the information he uncovered at Nebakov, thus completing the “Back in the Saddle” quest. It’s worth noting that even if Henry didn’t uncover the full truth about Nebakov, the quest will still conclude in a similar way.
