Fishing in Where Winds Meet can be a bit confusing at first, especially since the game doesn’t clearly show how to use your rod or fish outside the mini-game. This guide will help you understand everything in a simple way, how to get your fishing rod, how to cast your line anywhere, and how the fishing mini-game works, so you can start catching fish without any trouble.
Fishing Rod in Where Winds Meet

Head to Stonewash Strand. Just talk to the NPC here and ask for a rod. They will give you a basic fishing rod, and you can get better ones later as you progress. If the game doesn’t detect your rod right away, try leaving the area and returning.
How to Use a Fishing Rod and Fish
Once you get the fishing rod, you might wonder how to use it to fish anywhere without starting one of the fishing mini-games. Here’s the easy way to do it. Open the Develop tab and go to your Bag. Switch over to your Quick Use Items, and you should find your fishing rod there. These quick-use items appear at the bottom-right of your screen next to your abilities. Then, stand near any water, select the fishing rod, and hold Square (on console) to cast your line. You can also pick different baits from the menu at the bottom.
How to Play the Fishing Mini-Game
Once you have the fishing rod, you can fish wherever the game allows, either in the mini-game or while exploring. To start the mini-game, select your fishing rod from the menu. Then choose which rod and bait you want to use. Different baits will attract different kinds of fish.
The fishing controls are simple. Casting works the same as free-roam fishing; the only difference is that the mini-game gives you a score. To cast your line, hold Square (on console). The controls for your platform will also appear in the bottom-right corner. After casting, tap X to shake the line and attract a fish. When a fish bites, use the analogue stick to keep the fish icon inside the green bar. Keep it there long enough, and you will successfully catch the fish. Your running score shows at the bottom.
After you catch one, the game won’t automatically tell you to cast again; you just repeat the process: hold Square, pick your bait if needed, shake the line, and reel in another fish. Catch enough fish faster than the other player, and you will win the mini-game.
