One of the most fascinating aspects of Avowed’s side quests is their multiple initiation points. A prime example is the Memory of the Deep quest in the Emerald Stair, where players can unknowingly complete it without realising the various possible outcomes. This quest presents a difficult choice, with potentially unfortunate consequences. In this guide, we’ll walk you through completing Memory of the Deep and help you decide what to do with the Mysterious Meteorite in Avowed.
How to Begin the Quest Memory of the Deep in Avowed
There are multiple ways to begin Memory of the Deep in Avowed. One approach is to seek out Josep Abaccio, an animancer farmer in the southeastern region of Emerald Stair. He resides among the other farmers in the area, near the Coastal Farms marker on the map, just southeast of Maxim’s Claim.
To pinpoint Josep’s location, look for the letter “F” in Coastal Farms on your map—his farm is situated just below it. You’ll also notice a blue exclamation mark indicating the presence of a side quest in the area. When you speak with Josep, he reveals that the revenants he relies on for farming have mysteriously disappeared. He tasks you with uncovering where they’ve gone and determining the cause of the disturbance.
Your next destination is Lake Lacuna, located northwest of Fior Mes Iverno. This is where things get interesting, as you can bypass Josep entirely and start Memory of the Deep simply by visiting the lake. In fact, some players may not even realise that Josep is connected to this quest at all.
Note: If you begin Memory of the Deep at Lake Lacuna, it’s worth visiting Josep at his farm afterward. Doing so will give you access to two different outcomes and a choice between two possible rewards.
Upon reaching Lake Lacuna, you’ll have the option to speak with a mysterious figure standing on the docks. This stranger is actually a priest of Ondra known as the Giftbearer. He provides additional insight into why revenants are being drawn to the lake.
Getting the Meteorite from the Lake in Avowed
After speaking with the Giftbearer, your next task is to dive into the lake. As he claimed, something unusual lies at the bottom. Among the large tree roots and natural formations surrounding a deep hole, you’ll spot the Mysterious Meteorite. However, a more unsettling sight awaits—countless hands reaching from all sides, desperately grasping at the fallen fragment.
Upon picking it up, you’ll receive a notification revealing that this is believed to be a piece of Ionni Brathr, Eora’s shattered third moon—an intriguing addition to Avowed’s rich lore. Since air is limited, position yourself directly above the cavernous hole before diving, retrieve the meteorite quickly, and resurface immediately to avoid taking damage from oxygen deprivation.
Once you emerge, you won’t have much time to rest. A horde of Revenants—some surprisingly high-level for an area so close to Fior Mes Iverno—will be waiting. You can either attempt to escape by crossing the lake undetected or stand your ground and fight the undead.
Afterwards, the Giftbearer will reveal that he also seeks the Mysterious Meteorite. Now, you must decide whether to give it to Josep or the Giftbearer.
Note: If you didn’t speak with the Giftbearer before diving into the lake, you can still learn about his intentions by reading the note he left at the end of the dock.
What Happens if You Give the Mysterious Meteorite to the Giftbearer in Avowed?
If you choose to give the Mysterious Meteorite to the Giftbearer, you’ll need to find him at the docks southwest of Josep’s farm. He explains that his plan is to remove the meteorite from the Living Lands, possibly by casting it into the ocean, far from any inhabited areas.
If you agree and hand over the meteorite, it may seem that your only reward is 550 gold. However, if you rest and return to the docks later, you’ll discover the Statuette of Lament, a trinket that doubles your underwater breathing time.
What Happens if You Give the Mysterious Meteorite to the Josep in Avowed?
If you choose to give the Mysterious Meteorite to Josep, you’ll receive an immediate reward, but the outcome will be somewhat tragic. After visiting Lake Lacuna, it becomes clear that the meteorite is provoking violent reactions from the revenants. Despite this, Josep remains determined to use it as a means of controlling them.
Handing over the Mysterious Meteorite to Josep in Avowed grants you the Chanter’s Panpipes, a trinket that allows you to summon a Phantom to fight alongside you, along with 550 Suoles.
Whom Should You Give the Mysterious Meteorite to in Avowed?
If your priority is to prevent unnecessary deaths, giving the meteorite to the Giftbearer is the better choice, as it ensures a less tragic outcome. While the reward may not be essential, it’s still a nice bonus. On the other hand, if you’re thinking in terms of practicality, Josep’s trinket seems more useful. Extended underwater breathing can be helpful, but it has rarely felt necessary. Meanwhile, the ability to summon a Phantom as an extra fighter can be a valuable advantage, even if temporary.
