Gunpowder is the lifeblood of ranged combat in Windrose – but it isn’t handed to you early. You’ll usually scavenge powder from pirate camps and caches at first, then unlock the ability to craft your own only after reaching the Foothills, building a Millstone, and gathering sulfur and ash. This guide covers how to reach those milestones, where to reliably loot powder and how to unlock schematics to craft a millstone.
Foothills Main Questline

To be able to craft Gunpowder, you’ll have to progress the main questline and reach the second biome – which is the Foothills. And to reach Foothills, you’d have to defeat the local threat of Coastal Jungle – Thomas Richards.
Crafting Gunpowder

Crafting Gunpowder requires 2 resources, sulphur and ash. You get ash when you make coal out of wood, it’s a bi-product of making coal. And you can make coal through wood deposits into a charcoal kiln.
Obtaining Sulphur

You can get sulphur by mining the rocks that are shown in the above image. But you need an iron pickaxe to mine sulphur. And when you obtain sulphur, it will unlock new schematics for crafting gunpowder. But crafting gunpowder is done through Millstone.
Note : You can check out my other guide to obtain iron ores in Foothills and craft iron ingots.
Unlocking Millstone Schematics

You need to look for Ancient Farms throughout the Foothills, these farms contain Corn resources. And obtaining corn unlocks new schematics which include building a Millstone.

After you’ve unlocked Millstone schematics, get back to the base and build the millstone near your camp. You can now craft Homemade Gunpowder through the Millstone using the sulphur and ash resources.
