In Avowed, players quickly realise that herbs like Paradisan Ladder are among the rarest and most essential upgrade materials, making it crucial to know their locations. Unlike other materials needed for weapon and armour upgrades, high-rank essentials such as Paradisan Herb, Hylea’s Talon, and Admeth’s Wyrt can only be obtained through specific means.
This guide will not only help you find Paradisan Ladder in Avowed but also show you the locations of different upgrade plants in the game.
How to Get Paradisan Ladder in Avowed
You can find Paradisan Ladder in Avowed through various methods: discovering it while exploring, purchasing it from Merilyn the merchant in Paradise, earning it as a side quest reward, salvaging infused items, or downgrading Hylea’s Talon.
Exploring Areas
Paradisan Ladder can also be found while exploring Avowed’s wild areas and occasionally in city locations like Paradis. You can easily track it by looking for the plant logo on your mini-map, marked with a red circle above.
Since there are many similar plant types, it’s easy to mistake them for Paradisan Ladder. However, collecting any plants you come across while completing quests is a great way to build your stockpile for free over time.
Here are some key spots to search for Paradisan Ladder:
- Ruinous Cavern – Southwest of the outer Paradis wall
- Shrine to Woedica – Directly east of Paradis
- Pilgrim’s Path / Eothasian Temple – North of Paradis, during the “Dawntreader” mission
Note: Looting some chests and defeated enemies may contain upgrade plants as well.
Purchase from Merilyn
Buying from Merilyn in South Paradise is the quickest and most reliable way to obtain Paradisan Ladder in Avowed. When you first approach her, she’ll mention trying to prove a point to her blacksmith sister nearby. After this, you can access her inventory, where she sells five units of Paradisan Ladder for 150 coins each.
Additionally, she offers two unique items—the Many-Hued Doublet light armour and the Common Grimoire of Elements—which can be broken down for two units of Paradisan Ladder each. Her stock does not appear to respawn, even after resting at a party camp and returning the next day. However, if you need a quick supply for an upgrade, visiting Merilyn remains one of the best options.
Completing Side Quests
Avowed’s difficulty curve is designed to encourage players to engage in side quests, offering Paradisan Ladder as a reward for upgrades. For instance, in the early side quest “Escape Plan,” which you’ll naturally encounter while progressing through the campaign, you’ll receive various crafting materials, including two units of Paradisan Ladder.
While it requires some extra effort, completing these quests not only helps you stock up on this essential herb but also grants XP and other valuable rewards along the way.
Infusing/Breaking Down Items
In Avowed, you can break down items to recover core crafting materials like Softwood Branches, Pelts, and Iron Chunks. Additionally, higher-quality items that have been upgraded with Paradisan Ladder can yield some of it when dismantled.
For example, if you upgrade a Common Sword using Paradisan Ladder, you can break it down at your party camp workbench to reclaim some for future upgrades. As mentioned in Merilyn’s section, merchants also sell unique items that contain Paradisan Ladder. Check the “Break Down” section of their item descriptions to see if they provide any when dismantled.
Downgrade Hylea’s Talon
Once you’ve reached Emerald Stair in Avowed and acquired Hylea’s Talon, a higher-tier upgrade material, you can downgrade it into three units of Paradisan Ladder each. To do this, head to your party camp workbench, navigate to the “Crafting” tab, and switch from the “Upgrade Materials” section to the downgrade option.
If you’ve already settled on a set weapon loadout and don’t plan to change it, you might not need more Paradisan Ladder. However, this mechanic is incredibly useful if you decide to switch to a weaker weapon and need to upgrade it quickly to match the rest of your gear.
How to Find Hylea’s Talon in Avowed
Hylea’s Talon is primarily found growing in the Emerald Stair region. By using the same mini-map icon trick mentioned earlier, you can easily track it down while exploring. It can also be purchased from merchants and discovered in chests.
Additionally, breaking down ‘Fine’ quality gear yields at least two units of Hylea’s Talon. Unique items provide significantly more, though the exact amount varies.
Just like Paradisan Ladder, you can use Avowed’s upgrading and downgrading system to obtain more Hylea’s Talon from other herb-based crafting materials in your inventory. Here’s how the conversion works:
- 3 Paradisan Ladder = 1 Hylea’s Talon
- 1 Admeth’s Wyrt = 3 Hylea’s Talon
How to Find Admeth’s Wyrt in Avowed
Admeth’s Wyrt is primarily found growing in the Shatterscarp region. It can be purchased from merchants in this area and in later parts of the campaign, but merchants in Dawnshore and Emerald Stair do not seem to stock it. Like the other herbs, it can also be found in chests and looted from defeated enemies in Shatterscarp and beyond.
Breaking down ‘Exceptional’ quality gear from your inventory grants two units of Admeth’s Wyrt. At your party camp workbench, you can upgrade three Hylea’s Talon into one Admeth’s Wyrt. Since this herb sits at the top of the crafting chain, there is no way to downgrade other herbs to obtain more.
Upgrading and Downgrading Crafting Materials in Avowed
To use the upgrade and downgrade mechanic in Avowed, fast travel to any unlocked party camp and interact with the workbench by pressing X. Navigate to the ‘Crafting’ menu by pressing RB to tab over, then use the left and right d-pad to select either ‘Upgrade Materials’ or ‘Downgrade’. Choose the crafting material you want to upgrade or downgrade, confirm the transaction, and the materials will be automatically added to your inventory.
With plenty of native herb crafting materials in hand, you’re ready to upgrade your gear.
