How to Dodge in Avowed

Before setting off across the Living Lands in Avowed, it’s wise to pick up some essential tips to help you navigate its challenges—especially as a Godlike, where survival won’t come easy. Like any RPG, Avowed has its own unique systems and mechanics, which can feel overwhelming at first. To get you started on the right path, this guide will teach you how to Dodge in Avowed.

How Dodging Works in Avowed

In Avowed, you can perform a Dodge, enabling you to swiftly evade attacks and move out of harm’s way during combat. Here’s how dodging works in Avowed:

  • To dodge sideways, move laterally and press your jump bind. This manoeuvre is ideal for evading projectiles like arrows or sidestepping charging melee attackers.
  • To dodge backward, move in reverse and press your jump bind (Space Bar/A). This is particularly useful for avoiding sweeping horizontal strikes or area-of-effect attacks.

Note: You cannot dodge while moving forward. Pressing your jump bind while advancing will make you jump forward or perform parkour instead. Be mindful of this to avoid unintentionally leaping into enemy attacks during combat.

How to Dodge During Combat

During combat, you can hold the Block button (LT on an Xbox controller) to deflect incoming attacks, but only if your Off Hand is empty or you’re using a shield—making blocking ineffective for certain loadouts. However, some enemies have unblockable attacks, indicated by a red circle before they strike. In these cases, dodging is your best option to avoid damage. To dodge, press A (Xbox controller) while moving sideways or backward. Successfully evading an attack can also leave your opponent momentarily vulnerable, giving you a chance to land a counterattack.

Tips to Get Improved Dodges

The Evade ability in the Ranger tree reduces the stamina cost of dodging, allowing you to dodge more frequently and maintain your pace in combat while waiting for stamina to regenerate.

Additionally, certain items, like the Vailian Boots and Tranton Family Greaves, enhance dodge distance. To optimize your dodging, seek out gear with dodge distance or stamina bonuses, as well as enchantments that improve mobility.
