How to Catch Giant Squid in MH Wilds for Monster Squid Hunter Achievement

The slippery Goliath Squid, a giant sea creature, is hiding deep in Monster Hunter Wilds, presenting an interesting challenge and the sought-after “Monster (Squid) Hunter” achievement. Yet, it takes more than luck and a fishing rod to capture this elusive beast. It needs specific circumstances, expert bait, and perfect fishing minigame mastery. This guide will lead you through the exact steps you’ll need to find, bait, and hook the Giant Squid, to help you complete this challenging fishing task in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Giant Squid Location in MH Wilds

In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Goliath Squid is a rare aquatic creature that players can find at the top of the map, in Area 17 of the forest. It only appears during heavy rain, which happens randomly, so hunters may need to complete a few missions and check back to see if the weather has changed.

Once it’s raining, players can head to the forest’s peak provided they have the necessary gear. Catching the Goliath Squid unlocks the Monster (Squid) Hunter achievement.

What sets the Goliath Squid apart from other aquatic creatures is its massive size and the glowing patterns on its body, making it easier to spot especially at night, though it can still be found during the day if players pay close attention. Because it’s a rare spawn, even with the right conditions, it might take some time to find one.

How to Catch Giant Squid in MH Wilds

To catch the Goliath Squid in Monster Hunter Wilds, players need to unlock the Bait Tentacle Jig, one of several baits available from Kanya at the Forest Base Camp in Area 1. Kanya gradually offers fishing side quests, each involving catching fish in different locations. Completing these missions rewards players with various baits, including the Tentacle Jig, which is given after successfully catching a Whopper.

The Tentacle Jig seems to be the only bait the Goliath Squid responds to. While players might try other baits, they’ll likely have little success without it. For added convenience, there’s a camp players can set up near the top of the Forest map, close to Area 17. This makes it much easier to reach the squid’s location without repeatedly climbing the mountain.

However, hunters should stay alert monsters like the Rathian can unexpectedly show up and interrupt the fishing process. If a monster attacks while players are reeling in the squid, it’ll break the animation and cause the squid to escape.

There’s also an element of luck involved. Players may need to reach High-Rank level 15 to unlock the quest that rewards the Tentacle Jig bait, so it might take some time before they’re fully prepared to catch the elusive Goliath Squid.

Once hooked, a fishing minigame starts: players need to move the joystick in the direction the squid is pulling until it stops, then quickly spin the joystick to reel it in. This process repeats until the squid is caught. If the line breaks at any point, the squid will escape, and players will have to hope another one spawns before the rain stops for another chance at catching it.

Monster Squid Hunter Achievement in MH Wilds

The first step to catching the giant squid in Monster Hunter Wilds is completing a series of fishing side quests. These quests are given by Kanya, an NPC found at the camp in the Scarlet Forest region. The quests you need to finish are:

  • Fishing: A Microcosm of Life
  • Seeking the Goldenfish
  • Fishing for Favor
  • The Catch of a Lifetime

Once you’ve completed these, Kanya will offer a quest called Razzle Dazzle.

This quest is crucial because, along with the mission, Kanya will reward you with the Tentacle Jig, a special bait designed specifically for catching aquatic creatures with tentacles, like the Goliath Squid. For better odds of fishing successfully, don’t forget to equip the Pathfinder Jewel to boost your chances of reeling in rare catches.
