In Avowed, traveling through the Emerald Stair is not only about the view; it’s also a treasure hunt! Scattered throughout this area are the fragments of the Totem of Defiance, a strong artifact that provides passive benefits when constructed. This guide will lead you to each of the seven pieces – the Totem Base and the six crucial components – so you can craft this totem and reap its rewards. While a vendor in Fior mes Ivérno offers cryptic clues, they won’t mark the locations on your map. So, get ready to explore, climb, and solve a few mini-puzzles as you track down each piece of the Totem of Defiance!
All Totem Of Defiance Pieces Locations in Avowed
In Avowed, each region has a totem you can build that gives you helpful passive bonuses. In the Emerald Stair, that totem is the Totem of Defiance. You’ll need to find the Totem Base and six other pieces to put it together. There’s a vendor in Fior mes Ivérno who sells a note with short clues about where the pieces are hidden, but be warned: the note won’t mark the locations on your map, so you’ll have to do some exploring!
1. Totem Base
Looking for the Totem Base? It’s in the Shrine to Skaen, way over in the western part of the Emerald Stair. A good starting point is the Rock Arch Beacon fast-travel location. From there, head north, past Delemgan Glade, towards a set of ruins further west. You’ll need to climb to the very top of those ruins to find the Totem Base.
2. Idol of Covert Plots Location
Looking for the Idol of Covert Plots? Head to the Grim Wetlands in the northwest part of Emerald Stair. A little west of the Grim Wetlands Party Camp, you’ll find a small, locked building. The Idol is inside! You can’t go through the door though; you have to climb onto the roof. Approach the building from the west, and you’ll find a hole you can drop through. Once you’re inside, the Idol is on the altar on the ground floor.
3. Sacrificial Dagger Location
Need the Sacrificial Dagger? It’s stuck to the back door of a building in the Abandoned Farms area. Just walk around to the back of the building, and you’ll see it – it’s holding a note against the door.
4. Idol of Violent Rebellion Location
Need the Idol of Violent Rebellion? It’s up on top of the Ranger Headquarters in the eastern part of Emerald Stair, southeast of the Rolling Crags. Getting up there is pretty straightforward – just a bunch of ledges and ladders – but you’ll need a little boost to get started. Go to the south side of the tower. You’ll see some wooden crates with pots in them. Use those to jump up to the first ladder, and you’re on your way!
5. Obsidian Prayer Beads Location
To find the Obsidian Prayer Beads, you’ll need to go to Delemgan Glade, which is way out west in Emerald Stair. Go deep into the ruins there until you find a circular arena – it’s on the west side of the river you’ll see on your map. In the western part of that arena, look for a big tree trunk growing out of some rocks. Climb up that tree and onto the rocks. Then, turn left and follow the little path to a ledge. The Obsidian Prayer Beads are there.
6. Effigy Necklace Location
Looking for the Effigy Necklace? You’ll find it inside Naku Tedek, way down in the southwest corner of Emerald Stair. Once you’re in, go straight past the big Adra and down the stairs behind it. At the bottom, there’s a door on your left, but it’s locked by an electrical box right next to it. Open that door, and inside, you’ll need to freeze the water in the room. Then, jump onto the frozen water and up onto a big branch. The Effigy Necklace is on the ledge above that branch.
7. Idol of Secret Hatred Location
To find the Idol of Secret Hatred, head to the southwest part of Emerald Stair and look for the Ancient Grotto. Inside, go forward until you reach a big open room with some Godless ruins, you’ll see large pillars. On the left side of this room, there’s a path leading downwards. Follow it down to a room with some nasty poison water and a ledge on the other side. You’ll need to jump across some platforms to reach that ledge. Climb up, and you’ll see a skeleton in a glowing orange cave. Go right, and when the path splits, take the left and crouch down to squeeze through a small hole in the rocks. Follow that path into a small cave. Another skeleton is waiting at the back of this cave, and that’s where you’ll find the Idol of Secret Hatred.
