Shell durability and upgrades are what turn your character from survivable to reliable. In Mortal Shell 2 each shell has its own durability stats and those determine how long you can stay in the fight once you commit to using it. If your shell breaks too quickly, you end up spending more time recovering, repositioning or getting forced into defensive mode. This guide is about two things – increasing your shell’s durability so your shell lasts longer and upgrading shell’s abilities/ skills so their combat performance stays strong against tough enemies. In this section you’ll learn about what you’re going to need to upgrade shells and improve their skills.
Zhirelle The Shellkeeper
At the Marrows Keep, go through the doorway shown in the above image from the beacon to reach Zhirelle The Shellkeeper. Once you find her, interact with her to open the shellkeeper menu.
Shell Bonding
In the Shellkeeper menu, look for the Shell Bonding option. This is the key step for upgrading your shell progression, bonding is how you connect with the shellkeeper’s system so you can apply the improvements associated with your chosen shell. Take your time to select the perfect shell for your playstyle because the resources required to bond with the shells are hard to come by, so pick a shell suitable for your playstyle and upgrade the shell.
Note: The resources required to bond with shells are Glimpses. They come from several kinds of gameplay progress; cleansing beacons to defeating specific enemies for drops, so you can keep earning them naturally as you explore the world of Mortal Shell 2.
Shell Upgrades
Once you’ve bonded with the shells, each bonding level unlocks specific skills tied to that shell’s progression. In other words, bonding isn’t just a one time setup, it is what gradually gives your shell new capabilities, with each upgrade tier bringing a new set of upgrades or improvements linked to the shell you bonded to.
After you’ve bonded with the shell, you can further improve your shell at the beacon. When you rest at the beacon, select the level up section in the beacon menu. From there, select the shell upgrades, and you’ll be able to spend shell points to increase or upgrade the shell’s skills.
You get shell points by defeating enemies and completing certain in-game tasks, so the more you explore the world and progress normally, the more you’ll be able to invest back into your shell’s improvements.
