The Shrine of Sorrows is one of the most mysterious places in Mortal Shell 2 that you can explore. In order to get there, you will have to enter Night Mode and take a certain route through the Mushroom Village. Then you will have to find three books of Sonata, solve some puzzles, and perform a cauldron ritual. This guide will show you how to complete the Shrine of Sorrows.
How To Reach The Shrine Of Sorrows
The Shrine of Sorrows can be accessed only when Night Mode is activated. If you reach the Shrine of Sorrows area during the daytime without activating Nightfall, you will just find a totem across the bridge that has the following text:
“By the light of day, the truth remains sealed. And yet, in the darkness, all will be revealed.”
You can activate Night mode after locating the Gloombound Flame near the Great Arbiter of Flesh miniboss. This area is close to the Widow’s Overlook beacon. After picking up the Gloombound Flame, place it inside the lantern on the rooftop of Morrow’s Keep. Summon Thestus and talk to him to convert day to night and vice versa.
Once Night Mode is activated, you should fast travel to the Mushroom Village Beacon and then take the road to your right. Continue your journey past the dancing villagers and the first wooden bridge. You will reach a second wooden bridge just past the bonfire; go across that too.
After this, go toward the cocoon-looking object and interact with it. Accept the invitation to unlock the path leading to the Shrine of Sorrows. Your task there will be to get three Sonata books and put them into the box.
Shrine of Sorrows Puzzle
Before moving forward to enter the house, move left to get a chest which is locked. You need to light 3 candles for the offerings. You’ll find the first offering just to the left of the chest, near the broken shed.
Move towards the shed and take a right turn to reach the second offering located at the end of the path. Finally, come back to find the well and approach the candle located there for the third offering. Now, unlock the chest to find Dorsalite. Return to the locked chest and open it to collect Dorsalite.
How To Find The Books
Take the note and use the cauldron in front of you to take the Tempered Iron Key. Unlock the first door using this key and take the Moonlight Sonata from the corpse inside the room. Exit the room and go to the second room, where you can see the Sunlight Sonata lying on the floor.
There is one book that is still left. Before going to search for it, make your way towards the main entrance of the house once you hear the banging. When you come closer, you will see that a headless corpse will fall down on the floor.
Ignore it and exit the house. Outside, turn right and head towards the tree. Stand behind the tree to find another note, which will give you instructions about what to do next.
The first step to activate the puzzle is turning 360 degrees and observing the head. After that, repeat the process by making another turn and observing the head again. This time, when you want to make a turn, the environment will become different, and you’ll get to see yourself in a frozen world.
You should go near the gravestone to find the Starlight Sonata, take it with you and go back to the head fixed to the stick. Follow the same steps to leave the frozen world and come back to your regular environment. Bring the Starlight Sonata to the house and put all three Sonata books into the box in the second room to get Alluring Mushrooms.
Finding The Basement Key
Drop the Alluring Mushrooms into the cauldron and drink the potion. You will be teleported out of the house, but your surroundings will seem much darker and creepier than before. Return to the house and find the Basement Key from the table. Take it and unlock the basement door and enter it.
In the basement, you will notice a group of witches performing their ritual. Look behind yourself, and you will be held by one of the witches; this will mark the end of the Shrine of Sorrows questline. After the cutscene ends, you will get the Blackmarrow Key and the Tooth of Nochte. You can sell the Tooth of Nochte to Merrick to get some Gold.
How to Use the Blackmarrow Keys
The Blackmarrow Keys are used to unlock the chests, which can be found inside the elevator chamber of the Marrow Keep. There are 8 chests in total, and all of them correspond to one of the 8 shells available in the game. You will get a different shade for each shell. It is important to keep in mind that unlocking the chest is possible only after unlocking the corresponding shell.
