In Ghost of Yotei, the Trickster Fox Trophy is earned by finding and solving all of the Nine Tail’s Puzzle Boxes scattered throughout the game world. Each puzzle box is hidden in a specific location, and each offers a unique reward like coins, Shinobi Steel, charms, or special items. Some boxes are easy to spot, while others require solving environmental puzzles or exploring hidden areas. This guide will show you where to find every Puzzle Box and how to open them, so you can unlock the Trickster Fox Trophy and claim all the rewards.
All Nine Tail’s Puzzle Box Locations And Solutions
In Ghost of Yotei, there are 12 Nine Tail’s Puzzle Boxes scattered across the map. These boxes are hidden near Kitsune Altars, shrines, or enemy camps. The puzzle boxes include:
- The Peculiar Box in Sakura Woods
- Curious Box in Sentinel Forest
- Intricate Box in Shipwreck Shoal
- Manageable Box in Sarobetsu Forest
- Fascinating Box in Teshio Coast

Each box requires sliding panels or stripes in a specific sequence to open and offers rewards such as coins, crafting materials, charms, or unique masks. Below are the exact locations of the 12 puzzle boxes, along with the solutions to solve them.
Peculiar Box Puzzle Location
This puzzle box is in Sakura Woods. It’s on the ground, held by a dead enemy under a wooden structure. Once you reach the above marked location, clear out the enemies first. Then look for the dead body to find the Peculiar Box.
Peculiar Box Solution
To open the Peculiar Box, start by sliding the two black stripes on the front downward. Then, slide the panel on the top down. Once it’s open, you will get 750 coins as a reward.
Curious Box Puzzle Location
You will find this one at the Kitsune Altar located between Sentinel Forest and Sakura Woods. It’s just a little southeast of the Sentinel Forest Camp.
Curious Box Solution
To open the Curious Box, slide down the black stripes on all four sides of the box first. After that, slide the top panel down. Once it opens, you will receive 1500 coins as your reward.
Intricate Box Puzzle Location
Reach the location marked on the map above towards the Kitsune Altar in Shipwreck Shoal. Move forward and take a left. You will find the puzzle box below some snowy, rocky cliffs.
Intricate Box Solution
To open the Intricate Box, start with the front side. Slide the top-left sideways stripe to the left, then move the bottom-right sideways stripe to the right. After that, slide both vertical stripes on the front downward. Finally, slide down the panel on the top. Once it opens, you will get 8 Shinobi Steel as a reward.
Manageable Box Puzzle Location
Reach the above marked location. You will find the Manageable Box Puzzle in the Kitsune Altar in Sarobetsu Forest.
Manageable Box Solution
To open the Manageable Box, start by sliding the front panel down. Then, move the black stripe to the left. Slide the front panel down again. Now move the black stripe to the right; it will get stuck halfway. Slide the front panel down once more, and try sliding the black stripe to the right again; this time, it should come out the right side.
Slide the front panel down one last time. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. Your reward is the Charm of Drunken Adversary, which gives enemies killed in a Standoff a small chance to drop lootable Sake.
Fascinating Box Puzzle Location
You will find the Fascinating Box in the Teshio Coast Kitsune Altar. The puzzle box is right in front of the altar.
Fascinating Box Solution
To open the Fascinating Box, first slide the black stripe on the front to the right. Then slide the front panel down. Next, move the black stripe back to the left, and slide the front panel down again. After that, slide the top panel down to open the box. You will be rewarded with 7 Iron Sand.
Perplexing Box Puzzle Location
Inside this enemy camp, the puzzle box is right in front of the Altar of Reflection. First, you need to clear the camp, and you will end up right in front of it.
Perplexing Box Solution
To open the Perplexing Box, start on the front side. Slide the left black stripe to the left, the right black stripe to the right, and then slide the vertical black stripe down. Move to the right side and do the same, slide the black stripe to the right and the vertical stripe down. Now go to the left side and slide the black stripe to the left, followed by the vertical stripe down. There’s nothing to do on the back. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. You will get 1500 coins as your reward.
Devious Box Puzzle Location
To find the Devious Box, head towards the Crimson Forest. You need to enter the Snow Drift Springs Shrine to reach the hidden camp. The shrine door is locked; you will need to light the right three fox statues with a torch.
The first fox statue is on the left side. Take the fire from the braizer, near the door. Then light the leftmost fox (the fox statue is sitting up with a stick in its mouth).
Now, you need to move to the opposite set of statues. Here, you will find three fox statues. You need to light the rightmost fox (the fox is facing up with a stick in its mouth).
The final fox statue is above the rock structure opposite the door. Climb up the cliff and light the middle fox (the fox statue is sitting down).
Once the door opens, head inside, fight the enemies, and you will get a cutscene where you rescue a settler. After that, there’s one more fox puzzle at the end of the camp.
Here, you need to light the leftmost fox (the fox is facing forward). After that, light the second fox statue from the right (the fox is crouched, tail up).
If you light up the fox statues correctly, a rope will spawn. Climb up the ladder and cross the rope to get to the altar. Here, you will find the puzzle box.
Devious Box Solution
To open the Devious Box, start on the front. Slide the top-left stripe to the left and the top-right stripe to the right. Next, slide both middle stripes down; they will get stuck partway. Then slide the bottom-left stripe to the left and the bottom-right stripe to the right. Now, slide both middle stripes down again; this time, they should go all the way. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. Your reward will be 10 Iron Sand.
Interesting Box Puzzle Location
Enter this hidden camp via the “Snow’s Blight Shrine” in northwest Teshio Ridge. Defeat the enemies and free a hostage to start the shrine puzzle:
Here, you will find 2 sets of braziers. Light the two braziers on the left side of each set with lit lanterns above them.
Now, rotate the fox statues to match the direction of the ones carved into the wall. Now you will unlock two small fox statues, pick up the statues and place them into the opposite empty pedestals. The door stays shut, but a crawlspace opens on the right.
Inside, you will find more fox statues on the way. Rotate the statues to spawn the rope to move forward. Go through the ropes to exit the cave and reach the camp.
The camp’s location is marked on the map above. Clear out the enemies you will find here, defeat the camp leader, then go to the altar at the end to find the puzzle box. Finishing this also completes the “Nameless Killer” bounty.
Interesting Box Solution
To open the Interesting Box, slide the black stripe on the front to the left, then slide the front panel down. After that, slide the top panel down to open the box. Your reward is the Charm of the Wary Opponent, which lets you press L2 to focus on any enemy that has started to detect you.
Challenging Box Puzzle Location
Head to the “Nakajima Ice Cave” northwest of Sarobetsu Lake. The gate is locked. Rotate the right fox statue to the right and the left fox to the left (both facing away). A crawlspace opens.
Inside the cave, you will need to jump and grapple to pull yourself up. Keep climbing, and you find another fox statue. Turn the fox statue twice to make a rope appear, and climb across. Move forward and then interact with another fox statue once to drop a ladder.
Once you reach the camp, clear out the enemies. Here you will find more fox statues. In the back-right corner, turn the left fox once (to face right) and the right fox three times (to face left), and they should face each other. This reveals a rope that leads to the altar and puzzle box.
Challenging Box Solution
To open the Challenging Box, start on the front and slide the black stripe to the left. Move to the right side and slide the black stripe left, then slide the middle stripe down; it will get stuck. Go back to the front and slide the bottom part of the vertical black stripe down.
On the right side, slide the black stripe from left to right so it touches the middle stripe. Back on the front, slide the black stripe to the right. On the left side, slide the black stripe to the right and then slide the middle stripe down. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. Your reward is 8 Shinobi Steel.
Surprising Box Puzzle Location
Reach the location marked on the map above. Just clear out the enemies in this camp, and you will find the puzzle box in front of the Altar of Reflection.
Surprising Box Solution
To open the Surprising Box, start on the front by sliding the panel down. Then slide the black stripe to the right. Next, slide the panel up; it will get stuck. Slide the black stripe to the right again, and this time it will move further. Now slide the front panel down again; it will also move further. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. You will receive 2000 coins as a reward.
Elaborate Box Puzzle Location
Once you reach the camp, you will find a prisoner in the middle. You need to save the prisoner. Then fight alongside him to clear out the enemies in the camp. After the fight is over, you will find the puzzle box at the altar.
Elaborate Box Solution
To open the Elaborate Box, start on the front. Slide the top-left stripe to the left and the left vertical stripe down; it will get stuck. Next, slide the top-left stripe back to the right to return it to its starting position, then slide the bottom-left stripe to the left and the left vertical stripe down again; it will get stuck once more.
Now, slide the bottom-left stripe back to the right, then slide the top-left stripe to the left and the left vertical stripe down as far as it can go. After that, slide the right vertical stripe down so both vertical stripes are lowered by the same amount. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. Your reward is 10 Iron Sand.
Epic Box Puzzle Location
Reach the location marked on the map above, and you will find a hidden camp. To get to the hidden camp, you need to enter “Cape Inari Shrine”. First, you need to open the gate. You will find a blue symbol on the wall on the right side. Squeeze through the gap. Inside, you will find a fox lantern. Light the fox lantern inside and move out of the gap. Then, squeeze through the other gap on the left and light that fox too.
Now, you will hear a clicking noise. This opens a passage under the door. Inside, light two more fox lanterns, one on a cliff and the other inside a building. That unlocks a rope you can cross.
Now, move forward and climb up the wall. At the top, you will reach the camp. Here, you need to clear the enemies. On the right, light a fox next to a broken bridge to unlock a rope, and cross it to reach another area. After fighting more enemies, light one last fox at the cliff. That unlocks the final rope leading to the altar and puzzle box.
Epic Box Solution
To open the Epic Box, start on the back. Slide the top half of the black stripe up and the bottom half down. Then slide the black stripe to the left. Move to the left side and slide the black stripe left. On the front, slide the left half of the black stripe left, then slide the middle stripe down; it will get stuck. Slide the left half of the black stripe back to the right to return it to its starting position.
On the left side, slide the black stripe back to the right. Go back to the back and slide the black stripe to the right; it will now stick out. On the right side, slide the black stripe right. On the front, slide the black stripe right and then slide the middle stripe down. Finally, slide the top panel down to open the box. Your reward is the War Cry Mask.

To earn the Trickster Fox Trophy in Ghost of Yotei, you need to find and solve 12 Nine Tail’s Puzzle Boxes scattered across the map: Peculiar Box, Curious Box, Intricate Box, Manageable Box, Fascinating Box, Perplexing Box, Devious Box, Interesting Box, Challenging Box, Surprising Box, Elaborate Box, and Epic Box.
