In Dune: Awakening, becoming a Planettologist takes an extra effort. Unlike other professions that you can pick at the start, this one has to be unlocked by finding a special trainer and completing a short quest. This guide will show you where to find the trainer and how to complete the quest.
Planetologist – Trainer Location & Quest Guide
The Planettologist is one of five professions currently available in the game, but unlike the others, you can’t choose it when you first create your character. Instead, you have to find a specific NPC and complete a short quest to unlock it.
Find the Planettologist Trainer
To get started, you’ll need to track down Derek Shinara, the Planettologist trainer. He’s not too hard to find once you know where to look:
- Location: Just north of Haga Base, sitting on top of a large rock formation.
- Look for a path on the west side of the rock that winds its way to the top.
Once you reach the top and speak with Derek, go through his dialogue options until you get the chance to say “I would like to learn from you.”
After that, Derek will give you a contract and ask you to retrieve a special item called a Minimic Film. He tells you it’s located in Testing Station Number Two, also known as EcoAB.

The entrance to Testing Station No. 2 is just below where Derek is located, so it’s really close by. You’ll need to make your way through the facility and head toward the end to find the Minimic Reels. As you explore, you’ll eventually go down a winding staircase to a lower floor. In the next room, look at the right-hand wall you’ll see what looks like a bookcase with a thin yellow glow. That’s actually a secret door. Open it, and you’ll find a hidden room with a case containing the reel inside. There will be a surprise attack after you grab the item, so be ready. Once you’ve got the reel, climb back up to the top of the mountain and give it to Derek. This will unlock the Planettologist skill tree for your character.
