The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered comes with many new features, some of which make big changes to the old systems, including leveling. The new arrangement is sort of a cross between the old-school type of leveling from Oblivion and the more modern, sleek version from Skyrim.
Yet, in its essence, it seems to be something altogether different, something new. And truth be told, a lot of players, whether newbies or returning players, are confused about how exactly leveling works now. So if you are also in that category, worry not. This guide explains the whole deal starting from the premise of leveling through the new mechanics.
How Leveling Works in Oblivion Remastered
In Oblivion Remastered, leveling up is associated with both Major and Minor skills. With every skill, you’ll gain experience which will help you level up, but for Major Skills, the XP will be considerably higher than Minor Skills.
Every time you go up a level, you get 12 Virtue Points to distribute to the seven key Attributes of the game: Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, Agility, Speed, Endurance, Personality, and Luck. You can distribute the points the way you want, but one Attribute cannot receive more than 5 points in the same go.
Unlike the original game, how many points you add to an Attribute isn’t based on how often you’ve used related skills—it’s totally up to you now.
How to Level Up Your Skills and Character in Oblivion Remastered
In Oblivion Remastered, leveling up your Skills is all about doing actions tied to them. For example, picking locks levels up your Security skill, landing hits with Blade or Blunt weapons boosts those respective skills, taking damage while wearing armor levels up your Armor skills, and creating potions or poisons helps you level Alchemy.
If you want to level up your character faster, focus on improving your Major Skills since they give more XP. That said, Minor Skills now also contribute to your level progress, so you’ll probably find yourself leveling up a lot quicker than you did in the original game.
Once you’ve earned enough XP to level up, you’ll get a notification in the top-left corner saying something like, “Your (skill) increased. You should rest and meditate on what you’ve learned.” You’ll also see a bronze icon in the top-right corner—a moon circling an upward-pointing arrow. That’s your cue to find a bed and sleep to actually trigger the level-up.
Note: Just waiting won’t do the trick—you have to sleep in a bed you own or have access to. That means renting a room at an inn, using a bedroll, or sleeping in a house you’ve bought.
Attributes Points and Extra XP
You don’t need to sleep for a specific amount of time. As soon as you wake up, the leveling screen will appear, and you can spend your 12 Attribute points however you like (up to 5 points per Attribute). Once you’re happy with your choices, hit the “Confirm” button and jump back into the action. Also, if you gain more XP after filling your level bar but before sleeping, don’t worry—those extra points will carry over to your next level.
