How to Get Free Horse Mount Early in Oblivion Remastered – The Elder Scrolls IV

A horse would suffice when you realize that you are moving at an unbearable slow speed while traveling through Cyrodiil in Oblivion Remastered, they are much faster than walking and can scale very steep terrains that you might struggle to climb up on foot. Riding one can save fast travel time and help you escape from most enemies. However, a horse can really be quite expensive and take up a lot of time to acquire; this guide will help get a horse in more than one way, so read along!

How to Buy a Horse in Oblivion Remastered – The Elder Scrolls IV

There are several unique mounts like the Shadowmere or the Unicorn which are obtained by particular quests or sought after in the world. For those wanting to buy their own horse, travel to any of the major cities. Just speak to the stable owner and buy one of the available horses. It is best to forget going to the Imperial City, as this city does not have any horses for sale.

Types of Stable Horses

There are five different horse types available for purchase at stables, each with unique stats and prices:

  • Bay Horse: Found at Bay Roan Stables in Bravil and Grateful Pass Stables in Skingrad. Speed: 26. Armor compatible. Price: 1,000 gold.
  • Black Horse: Available at Black Waterside Stables in Cheydinhal. Speed: 33. Can wear armor. Price: 5,000 gold.
  • Chestnut Horse: Sold at North Country Stables in Chorrol. Speed: 29. Armor compatible. Price: 2,500 gold.
  • Paint Horse: Offered at Wild Eye Stables in Bruma and Five Riders Stables in Leyawiin. Speed: 23. Can wear armor. Price: 500 gold.
  • White Horse: Found at Horse Whisperer Stables in Anvil. Speed: 29. Armor compatible. Price: 4,000 gold.

Note: When you dismount a horse bought from a stable, it will begin heading back to the stable where you originally bought it. If you switch to a different active horse, the others you own will return to their respective stables. Keep in mind, you can only own one horse from each stable at any given time.

How to Get a Horse for Free in Oblivion Remastered – The Elder Scrolls IV

You get it from Jauffre, the free horse-he’s part of the main questline in Deliver the Amulet main quest. Basically, once you get into the game, follow the main story quest. You’ll go to Kvatch, where you’ll need to clear an Oblivion gate, and rescue some civilians from a chapel there.

Then comes the point where you’re told to carry the Emperor’s son back to Weynon Priory. When you return to Weynon Priory, it will be under siege. Put down the foes and speak with Jauffre; when prompted to select the “Assistance” option, do so. He will tell you to take the Prior’s horse, since the Prior was unfortunately killed in the attack.

Of course, if it comes to it, you wouldn’t need to address him at all; you could just take off with the horse. Speaking with him, however, would be a good thing to do in order to make sure you’re not stealing from him.

Now, go to the stables located outside and look for the horse belonging to Prior Maborel. This is the stable of Weynon Priory. Check out the horse called Prior Maborel’s Paint Horse-that’s the one you want. Voila-now you have a free horse!

Note: The Armored Old Nag is a special horse that comes with the Horse Armor DLC. You can find her at the Chestnut Handy Stables just outside the Imperial City, and she’s completely free to claim.

How to Steal a Horse in Oblivion Remastered – The Elder Scrolls IV

Stealing a horse basically means to mount and ride away, which is the easy part; the challenge comes in doing so inconspicuously. Since you cannot make yourself invisible, sneaking is the best way to approach your target. Do so under cover of darkness so that no other living creature will be able to see you-not even horses. When you’ve mounted, ride away in haste. Once mounted, the horse has become your “active mount.”

Alone, these stolen horses might wander back to their original stations. But any attempt to mount a stolen horse would mean that you have to sneak again in order to avoid gaining a bounty.

Important to Know: Shadowmere, a shadowy black mare with flaming red eyes, is linked to the Dark Brotherhood and is the fastest horse in the game. You receive her as a gift from Lucien Lachance upon completing The Purification quest. Shadowmere can wear armor, assist you in battle even when not mounted, and is invulnerable in combat.
