In Where Winds Meet, the Under Another’s Roof quest is one of those quests that is confusing because of the game’s poor explanation of how the construction mechanics work (especially for console users). If you’re having problems dismantling items or why no crafted items are working, or where to build your structures and not getting counted, this walkthrough will break down every step for you, so you can complete this quest with no confusion and no wasted materials.
How the Quest Begins

You’ll start this quest by speaking to an NPC located in an area that may not be unlocked yet. If you don’t see the marker immediately, keep exploring nearby regions until it appears. Once you reach the location and talk to the character, you’ll go on a short walk with them. Stay close and listen through the entire conversation. This section triggers the tutorial-style portion of the quest that introduces construction mechanics.
Opening Construction Mode

At the next objective, you’ll need to use the construction system. On PlayStation, you can enter Construction Mode by pressing the Touchpad and R2 together. If you’re playing on a different platform, the correct button prompt will appear at the top of the screen when the construction wheel opens. Once construction mode is active, the available building pieces will be displayed along the bottom of the screen.
At this point, the quest tells you to rebuild part of a four-rafter house. This is where most players make a mistake. You can open your inventory and see options to craft construction materials like pillars or columns.
Do not craft anything here. Even if you have the materials and successfully craft pillars, they will not work for this quest and cannot be placed. Construction as a feature isn’t fully available yet, so using your materials here only wastes resources.
Recycling Existing Pillars

What you actually need to do is recycle existing parts from the structure.
- In construction mode, select the trash can icon (R3 on PlayStation)
- Move over to the back wall of the house
- You’ll notice multiple pillars that aren’t needed
- Select each unnecessary pillar and choose Recycle
After recycling them, those pillars are added to your inventory. These are the only pillars that the quest will recognize.
Placing the Pillars Correctly

Once reclaimed, select the pillars from your inventory and place them using R2.
- Place one pillar on each end of the wall
- If required, place another pillar in the center
Completing this step finishes the first major construction objective and updates the quest.
Investigating the Suspicious Figure

The next objective sends you to investigate a nearby person. The location is very close, so no fast travel is needed. After speaking with them, you’ll need to listen in on several conversations around the area. These are short and placed close together:
- One is at ground level
- Another is above a nearby house
- The last one is positioned close by
Listening to all of them gives you the information needed to move forward.
With the clues gathered, head back to the NPC you spoke to earlier. After the conversation, you’ll be tasked with retrieving a construction manual needed to rebuild the next house.
Getting the Manual and Manuscript

Go to the small hut linked to the objective. Although the front door is locked, you can still get inside by jumping through the window at the back. Once inside, pick up the manual from the cupboard. Before leaving, make sure to check the back room and collect the manuscript from the bookcase. While there are a few other objects you can inspect, the manuscript is the key item needed to progress the quest.
Rebuilding the Correct House

Return to the construction guide and then head to the correct house. This is important, build the house next to where you’re standing, the one that already has a roof. Building on the wrong structure will not progress the quest. Enter construction mode and place the required parts:
- Walls
- Windows (they are wooden, not glass)
- Doors at the entrance
You may already have these pieces in your inventory. If not, recycled parts from nearby structures may be usable. Be careful to select the correct item before placing anything, as the system allows incorrect placements.
Final Step and Quest Completion
Once the house is fully built, exit construction mode and speak to the shop owner outside. They’ll send you to one final location to close out the quest. After finishing the dialogue at that location, Under Another’s Roof will be marked complete.
