The quest “I See Darkness” in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon will test players with lots of difficult decisions and moral dilemmas. In this guide, you will learn how to complete all the steps in the quest; from finding out about the strange sickness in the Village, to your uncomfortable encounter with Abhartach. See where your decisions lead and whether or not letting him bite you was worth the risk!
Starting the Quest

As you are passing through the Village, you will eventually come across a strange encounter: a man in a cage and a distressed woman nearby. Start a conversation with the woman (named Betrys), and she will inform you about a grim illness that has spread to the Keepers, said to have been brought in by a refugee. If you agree to investigate, you will begin the “I See Darkness” quest.
Tracking the Source
Betrys will direct you to a campsite near the King’s Road. Head north of the fortress, following the quest marker to locate the area. When you arrive, prepare for a fight—a Corpse Eater will be lurking nearby. Defeat the creature, then approach the sleeping mat by the marker.
Lie down to rest and you’ll slip into a dream world, which is where things really start to get strange.
Meeting Abhartach
In this eerie dream realm, follow the voice echoing through the landscape. Eventually, you’ll come across Abhartach, a chained Fore-Dweller, at the bottom of a dark pit. He’ll plead for just a “single bite” of your blood, claiming it’s the key to curing the infected.
You’re now faced with a choice:
Allow the bite – You’ll take minor damage, but thanks to your Arthurian bloodline, it turns toxic for Abhartach, killing him instantly.
Refuse – He’ll attack you in a brief boss encounter. But don’t worry—he’s so weak that he only manages a single strike before collapsing.
Either way, you’ll end up with Abhartach’s loot, including the Fore-Dweller’s Bauble, a magical focus item.
Returning to the Village
Back in the real world, return to Betrys to report what happened. She’ll tell you that Mahon, one of the afflicted Keepers, has recovered. Sadly, Col, her partner, hasn’t improved and remains in a catatonic state.
The Final Decision
At this point, if your Spirituality attribute is high enough, you’ll get the option to convince Betrys to let you end Col’s suffering. If successful, she’ll ask you to do it discreetly during the night.
Carry it out quietly to avoid gaining a bounty and complete the quest.
You’ll earn extra gold and experience as a reward for handling it compassionately.
Fail the persuasion check, and the quest wraps up without any further resolution—no reward, no closure for Col.
