Lockpicking is a central mechanic in Dying Light: The Beast, and it frequently gets in the way of some of the greatest loot in the game. Aside from useful resources and equipment, being good at lockpicking is also necessary to advance through the main quest. This guide describes how the mechanics work, how to optimize for success, and how to ensure you never run out of lockpicks.
How to Pick Locks

If you’ve played earlier Dying Light games—or titles like Skyrim or Fallout 4—the system will feel familiar. Each lock has a hidden sweet spot, and your goal is to align your pick with it.
- Use the left analog stick to move your lockpick around.
- Gently push the right analog stick to “test” the lock.
If your pick is aligned correctly, the lock will turn and open. On easy or medium locks, the sweet spot is fairly wide, making success more forgiving. On hard locks, however, you’ll need to be extremely precise. Forcing the lock when you’re misaligned will snap the pick, consuming one from your inventory.
The secret is to go slow. Begin by trying the extremes—all the way left, all the way right, and middle. Small movements on the right stick will produce subtle cues: controller vibrations or lock resistance. The closer you are to the proper angle, the more the lock will resist before giving way, providing a hint to adjust your pick’s placement further.
How to Get More Lockpicks

Lockpicks are crafted through the Crafting Menu or at any workbench, and they fall under the Gadgets section. Each one costs 3 Scraps to make. Since scraps are one of the most common resources in the game, you’ll rarely find yourself short on materials.
What’s more indulgent about this is that you don’t have to have a workbench in order to craft them—you can produce lockpicks straight from your inventory whenever you want. That implies that if you get through one during a mission or encounter a locked chest out in the field, you can craft new ones immediately without disrupting your flow.
Why Lockpicking Matters
Lockpicking isn’t just about opening doors. Many of the best weapons, rare crafting materials, and hidden side routes are tucked behind locked chests or gates. With an endless supply of lockpicks at your disposal, there’s no reason to leave valuable loot behind. Mastering the system early ensures that locked barriers never slow your progress in the decaying world of The Beast.
