The Fossilized Shovel, introduced with the Volcano Expansion, is a special tool that can’t be found in the usual shops. You will ideally have to complete a quest and gather some rare minerals for it. This guide will give you details on unlocking the underground area of Windswept Beach, solving the mineral puzzle, and determining where the Fossilized Shovel is hidden for purchase.
Finding the Fossilized Shovel
Coming in with the Volcano Expansion and going above-and-beyond just regular shop purchases, this Fossilized Shovel is tucked right beneath Windswept Beach somewhere deep underground. To unlock it, one must finish a special quest and gather some rare minerals.
To enter the underground area at Windswept Beach, you need to complete the quest Beneath the Earth that you receive by speaking to the Lightkeeper in that location. It tasks you with acquiring the Volcanic Key, a rare Legendary mineral located in the Infernal Heart dig-site. Given its rarity, using Luck Potions and Luck Totems can greatly enhance your chances. You will also need to collect Uranium, Flareloom, and Catseye, all of which can be found at the same digsite.
Once you’ve gathered these, talk to the Lightkeeper again while equipping the Volcanic Key. This will unlock a trapdoor under the lighthouse stairs, letting you explore the underground.
Navigating the Underground Maze and Getting the Shovel
Inside, there’s a locked door that opens only when you place the three minerals on matching pedestals: Uranium on the radioactive symbol, Catseye on the eye symbol, and Flareloom on the fire symbol. Beyond the door, follow the path carefully — go straight, take the first left, then head toward a torch-lit corridor on your right. At the end, you’ll find a room with a bed and a bookshelf. Press ‘E’ to move the bookshelf and reveal a hidden space with the Fossilized Shovel, which you can buy for 1 billion Money.
