Starting your Monster Hunter Wilds journey involves stepping into a world filled with resources, and the core of your initial crafting and development is acquiring Low Rank materials. These base items are essential in constructing your equipment, upgrading your equipment, and learning the fundamentals of the game. Whether you’re a veteran hunter or new to the series, learning how to effectively acquire these materials is crucial. This guide will shed light on the routes to acquiring Low Rank materials, ranging from classic hunting and gathering to the new Material Retrieval system, so you’re prepared to face whatever challenges await.
How to Get Low Rank Materials
To get low rank materials you will need to complete the low rank quests by talking to Alma. Low Rank quests are what you’ll tackle at the start of the game’s campaign. They serve as an introduction to the game’s mechanics and its world, making them perfect for new players. This is also a great time to experiment with different weapons to find the one that suits your playstyle.
Low Rank covers the first half of the main story, taking you through all the major regions and introducing you to key NPCs. Once you finish all the Low Rank quests, you’ll unlock High Rank, where the difficulty takes a noticeable leap.
It’s a good idea to stick with Low Rank until you’re confident with the basics since High Rank monsters hit harder and require better strategies. Also, your Low Rank armor becomes pretty much useless once you step into High Rank, so there’s no real reason to grind for LR gear. However, if you want to gather Low Rank materials, whether for crafting basic weapons, upgrading early gear, or completing side quests, focus on hunting smaller monsters, gathering from resource nodes, and completing optional quests.
How to Get Low Rank Materials automatically
In Monster Hunter Wilds, Material Retrieval lets you send NPCs from various settlements to gather materials for you, running quietly in the background while you hunt. You unlock this feature gradually, the first time after completing Chapter Four, Mission Two, and the rest through side quests in each village. There are five characters who handle Material Retrieval: Apar in Suja (unlocked through the story), Murtabak in Kunafa, Plumpeach in Wudwud Hideout, Sabar in Azuz, and Rysher in Sild.
Each character can gather materials simultaneously, holding up to 16 item slots with stack sizes depending on the item. The more stars an item has (ranging from half a star to three stars), the faster and more plentiful the gathering. Weather also impacts how effective they are some materials, like berries, are more abundant during certain conditions. To collect your gathered goods, you’ll need to visit each NPC in person or speak to Nata once he becomes the Village Intermediary.
