How to Beat Sprong in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Sprong is one of the hardest boss in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. With heavy attacks and high-damage combos, this battle depends on your timing and team composition. You can beat Sprong with a good strategy. This guide explains Sprong’s attack, tricks to survive, and assists you in team building.

How to Defeat Sprong

Sprong is located on The Continent, an island in the middle of the ocean between the Crushing Cavern and Blades’ Graveyard. To defeat Sprong you need to survive its attacks for a longer period of time. If your team can survive the fight, you will gradually kill Sprong in the long run. Don’t engage Sprong too soon. It’s advisable to wait until your team is approximately level 65 and your weapons are at least level 25. This normally occurs in Act 3.

Sprong attack pattern

Sprong repeats the same five moves in a set order for the entire battle.

  • In Stage One, Sprong starts with a heavy move, an overhead smash that strikes your whole party simultaneously. It’s a heavy physical attack and usually the toughest single hit.
  • Then, in Stage Two, Sprong changes its approach and attacks people. It shoots three rhythmic bullets, one at a random party member each time, and pauses before firing a fourth. They deal Dark damage and put the Exhausted status on you, which can limit your AP building and skill use. The trick here is to parry every shot the moment it completes charging to take no damage and no effects.
  • Stage Three is filled with melee attacks. Sprong performs a five-hit combo: three rapid hits and two slower, heavier hits, once more hitting the entire party. Loosing too many parries is possible here, particularly if several members are already Exhausted or weakened.
  • Stage Four is where Sprong doesn’t directly attack but rather starts building up its most devastating attack: the Extermination Boom. Take this opportunity to catch your breath, a very short window of time to heal, revive lost teammates, and reapply buffs.
  • Lastly, Stage Five releases the Extermination Boom, two massive beams of Dark energy aimed at the entire party. Similar to Stage Two, careful parries synced with the end of each charge is key to survival.

Though the Stage One opening smash is Sprong’s strongest singular attack, actual danger lies with the build-up damage of combos, so use Healing Light to cleanse it immediately. A good approach is to start recovering, healing, reviving, and repelling immediately following Stage Three melee combo. It leaves you with barely enough time to plan before the Extermination Boom goes off and it begins again.

Tips to Defeat Sprong

To Defeat Sprong, you need to build a good team and follow the following strategy.

  • To keep your team memebers alive longer, add Pictos that boost Defense and Health, particularly for characters whose weapons scale through Agility, Defense, or Vitality to deal more damage.
  • Provide a low-health character with a Picto or Lumina with the Protecting Death ability. When they get knocked out (typically after a missed parry), they’ll provide Shields to your other characters. This protects your other characters from Sprong’s powerful combo attacks.
  • Support Skills can make a big difference. Maelle’s Guard Up or Monoco’s Troubadour Trumpet can grant Shell to your team, improving defense. Both are effective with more frequency coming from Maelle’s one, but the former is as helpful. Additionally, you may make Shell all the better through the Powerful on Shell trait by improving your team’s attack rate at the same time.
  • If no one in your party can cancel Status Effects, ensure that all members have Cleansing Tint. This will cancel bad effects such as Exhaust, which can prevent you from using Skills. It’s really important to cancel that during the battle.
  • Some special team builds, like Verso’s Corpeso Burn Combo, can beat Sprong using just basic attacks. But for most players, you’ll need to use Skills like in other boss fights.
  • Augmented Counter is an excellent passive skill to use in this fight. Sprong’s attacks are very simple to see coming, so you can parry and counterattack frequently once you know the timing. These counterattacks can be more damaging than regular hits, and with good timing, that can be very rewarding.

After defeating Sprong, you will be rewarded with the Sprong Trophy, Cheater Picto, along with 3 Grandiose Chroma Catalysts, 15,980 Chroma, and a solid amount of XP, making the fight well worth the effort.
