Finding Caine during the Lost Apprentice walkthrough sends you to one of Gothic 1 Remake’s more memorable investigative detours which starts in Swamp Camp and ends in an Abandoned Mine that’s located in the beginning area of your journey. What begins as a simple missing person task slowly unfolds into a mainstream storyline. This guide shows you exactly how to start the quest, where to look for clues, location of the abandoned mines and what dangers can you expect in the abandoned mine.
The Lost Apprentice Quest
After chapter 2 starts you’ll be sent to Swamp Camp to monitor their plans and gather information about their ritual, The Great Awakening. You’ll learn about Old Camp’s spy, Caine who is Cor Kalom’s apprentice in the Swamp Camp from Raven and you’ll be tasked to get to the Swamp Camp and talk to Caine to get into the Sleeper’s inner circle and gather information about the ritual. After you get to the Swamp Camp, you need to navigate to Cor Kalom’s laboratory and speak with him to learn about Caine’s disappearance.
Finding Clues
As you leave Kalom’s laboratory, the Templar at the door will speak to you and ask that you search Caine’s hut for any clues about his whereabouts.
Caine’s Hut Location
I’ll guide you to Caine’s hut starting from the Swamp Camp entrance. From there, take the right hand path past Baal Nambib and Lester standing near the entrance and continue following the path that veers to the right.
Proceed along the path and you’ll come to the camp area where herbs are prepared. Caine’s hut is directly opposite that spot, you can recognize his hut by a novice sitting beside it smoking a pipe as shown in the above images.
Inside his hut, you’ll find a sketch of an abandoned mine. You can ask around to learn about the mine but all npc’s will redirect you to speak with Lester since he knows the layout of the colony very well.
Finding Lester
You’ll find Lester at the entrance of the Swamp Camp talking to another NPC Baal Nambib as shown in the above image. After speaking with Lester, you’ll learn about the abandoned mine’s location which is located on the north side of the colony.
Abandoned Mine Location
Make your way to the map location which is to the north of the colony, it’s close to the area where your adventure began and where you found your first pickaxe. This spot should be familiar from early game exploration.
A shadow Orry will be guarding the abandoned mine and will refuse you entry unless you deal with him. You can persuade him to step aside by bribing him with ore nuggets or herb rolls if you have any or force the issue in combat. He hands over the mine key you’ll need to unlock the gate after you’ve dealt with him.
Finding Caine
Navigate the abandoned mine until you reach the final chamber where you’ll encounter an Undead Orc, defeat him in combat and take the amulet the orc wears. And If you inspect the room, you’ll discover Caine’s corpse. Return to Cor Kalom and report what you found to complete the Lost Apprentice quest.
