Avowed That Which Remains Quest Guide

As you step into Shatterscarp in Avowed, you’ll find a range of side quests to take on. One of the earliest you may come across is That Which Remains, which unfolds in the Dreamthrall-infested lands near Eagle’s Reach. From the very start, this quest is shrouded in mystery, and by the end, you’ll face a crucial decision that could determine the fate of a group of people. For a complete walkthrough of That Which Remains, check out the guide below.

How to Begin That Which Remains Quest in Avowed

At the Ancient Lakebed, near the Lakebed Grotto, you’ll come across a burned-down house beside a cliff. Climb up the cliff and jump through the rooftop opening to enter the house. Inside, you’ll find the corpse of an Aedyran Cleric along with a Flame-Eaten Diary. Picking it up will trigger the quest That Which Remains.

Reading the diary reveals that local villagers once set up a laboratory in the area, but something went horribly wrong. To investigate further, you’ll need to acquire two keys. The first is the Research House Key, which can be found in the house next to the dead cleric.

Once you have the key, follow your map to the blue quest zone and enter the laboratory. Inside, your goal is to locate the Well Key, which rests on a table in the back room next to a note. After obtaining it, follow your map to a water well and interact with it to unlock the entrance to Scaedclef Grotto. Climb down to continue the quest.

Exploring the Grotto in Avowed

Inside the grotto, head east along the path, where you’ll encounter several Crystal Eaters and Crystal Eater Spiderlings. Defeat them, then look for a narrow passage leading to more Crystal Eater enemies. After eliminating them, continue following the path until you reach a small opening with a lockbox. Open it to receive rewards such as 20 Golden Scelling, 2 White Steel Chunks, and a Spider Leg.

Alternatively, you can take the side path to the left of the crystal chamber, but it leads only to a small chest and doesn’t progress the quest.

Talking With the Survivors in Avowed

In the next room, you’ll find a cage containing several people afflicted by the Dreamscourge. Though you can’t speak to them, you can overhear whispers coming from behind a nearby wall. There’s a door leading to the survivors, but it’s locked. To reach them, climb up the rocks to the right of the cage and enter their room.

The survivors are friendly, and after speaking with them, you’ll learn that they were once the residents of the laboratory you explored earlier. When some of their colleagues began showing signs of the Dreamscourge, they set fire to the lab. Those unaffected fled into Scaedclef Grotto, but soon after, the ones now trapped in the cage also succumbed to the disease. The remaining survivors are torn—they must decide whether to spare them or end their suffering.

The survivors present you with two choices given their situation. They cannot bring themselves to kill the Dreamthralls, as these were once their friends and lovers, but they also require provisions from the Aedyrans at Eagle’s Reach. One survivor asks you to eliminate the Dreamthralls, while another pleads for their lives and requests that you secure provisions instead.

The decision is yours to make.

What Happens if You Kill Dreamthralls in Avowed

If you decide to kill the Dreamthralls, unbar the door and eliminate all of them inside the cage. Once they are dealt with, return to the survivors in the next room and speak with them. You will then have several options for how they should proceed with the quest:

  • Go to Eagle’s Reach. With the Dreamthralls gone, Wymgar will have no excuse to refuse you shelter.
  • I’ll talk to Wymgar about getting you better provisions.
  • [Attack] Fine. I’ll put you out of your misery.

If you choose the first option, you’ll receive 900 gold, and the That Which Remains quest will be complete. Alternatively, you can select the second option and request provisions, as Tobin originally asked. While attacking the survivors is an option, it serves no real purpose and will immediately end the quest.

Provisions

If you choose to request provisions, whether before or after killing the Dreamthralls, return to Eagle’s Reach and speak with Captain Wymgar. Feeling guilty for not informing you about the laboratory’s situation, he agrees to send provisions to the survivors immediately. If you haven’t already dealt with the Dreamthralls, he assures you that he will handle them. Speaking with Captain Wymgar completes the That Which Remains quest and rewards you with 900 gold.
