The Speartuna fish is most commonly found in Area 13 and Area 17 of the Scarlet Forest during the Fallow season, especially in the morning. It’s easy to recognize, looking like a small Swordfish and noticeably larger than the other fish in the water. Sometimes, but not always, you can spot a Speartuna by looking for rough waters. These spots are marked by a white, foamy circle on the surface, a clear sign that a Speartuna might be nearby. Just keep in mind, the fish isn’t always immediately visible since the water can be a bit murky.
How to Catch Speartuna in Monster Hunter Wilds
The Speartuna only bites when you use Tuff Joint Bait. This bait is a quest-exclusive item you can get during the side quest “The Catch of a Lifetime”, which becomes available in Chapter 4. To get the Tuff Joint Bait, make sure you’ve completed all the previous fishing quests and advanced to Chapter 4, then talk to Kanya at the Scarlet Forest base camp.
Catching the Speartuna takes patience and a bit of strategy. If you miss your chance after getting a bite, the Speartuna will disappear until the next Fallow morning, so you’ll want to get it right! Since it’s classified as a Whopper, reeling it in works differently than with regular fish. Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to help you catch one:
- Cast your line using the Tuff Joint Bait near the Speartuna.
- Slow reel to get its attention:
- Controller: Slowly rotate the Left-Stick in a circle.
- PC (KB/M): Press W/S repeatedly (it helps to press W/S first, then spam W/A/S/D to trigger a bite).
- Once the Speartuna bites, it will dart left and right to break free. Follow its movements:
- Controller: Use the Left-Stick to track its direction.
- PC (KB/M): Use the A/D keys.
- Sometimes, the Speartuna will jump out of the water — stay focused and follow its movements again:
- Controller: Move the Left-Stick and hold RT/R2.
- PC (KB/M): Use W/A/S/D and hold the Middle-Mouse button.
- Eventually, the Speartuna will stop moving and remain still in the water. This is your moment! Reel it in quickly:
- Controller: Move the Left-Stick up and down rapidly.
- PC (KB/M): Spam W/S, like you did during slow reeling.
Follow these steps, and you’ll finally catch the Speartuna, earning yourself a shiny Speartuna Fin.
