By now, you’ve likely encountered nearly every monster that Monster Hunter Wilds has to offer—from the towering Nu Udra to the tiny Quatrefly. Yet, the Forbidden Lands remain teeming with endless endemic life. Throughout the game’s diverse regions, many of these creatures are incredibly small, making them easy to overlook.
For his final request, Dareel has set his sights on one of the tiniest creatures in the Forbidden Lands—the elusive Gillopod. Despite its size, tracking one down is surprisingly challenging. So, let’s take on this quest, uncover some endemic life, and finally put an end to this researcher’s long-standing feud.
How to Begin Dareel’s Special Research Report
As always, Dareel and Samin remain at the Windward Plains Base Camp, never venturing out to conduct their own research. To take on this quest, you must have already completed both Research Report and Research Report (Cont.) quests. Fortunately, this one becomes available immediately after the previous quest, without requiring further story progression.
This time, your task is to locate a Gillopod. However, not only is this creature quite small, but its resemblance to another endemic lifeform makes it easy to mistake one for the other.
How to Locate Gillopods in Monster Hunter Wilds
If you’ve already explored the Ruins of Wyveria, you might have spotted the pink Pillopods clinging to the rocks. Gillopods are their much larger relatives, but to capture one, you’ll need to find a specific location. You can find a Gillopod along the path between Area 7 and Area 10 in the lower layer of the Ruins of Wyveria. These stationary creatures feed on the Wyrmway, the massive, tree-like structure in the underground region. To locate one, head to the white branch pathway that crosses above the central Wyrmway between these two areas.
As you make your way along the path, watch for a large, flat, gray, rectangular creature with blue markings—this is a Gillopod. You may have already noticed the smaller, pink Pillopods, which cling to the Wyrmway’s branches and surrounding rocks. The larger Gillopod can usually be found attached to branches along the side of the path or on nearby rocks. If it doesn’t appear, try searching the lower branch pathways in the region.
How to Capture Gillopods in Monster Hunter Wilds
Once you’ve located a Gillopod, the next step is to capture it. Equip your Capture Net from either the item bar or the Essential Items radial menu.
With the new rectangle reticle, move closer to the Gillopod—it won’t react to your presence, so there’s no need for stealth. Wait for the reticle to turn yellow-orange, then fire. Just be sure to press L2/LT instead of the usual Square/X to avoid any mistakes.
Rewards You’ll Get
Return to the home base at the Plains, and Dareel will reward you with 10 Gloamgrass Bud and 5 Honey.
Note: You can combine Gloamgrass Bud with a Godbug to craft Dust of Life, while Honey can be mixed with Potions to create the highly useful Mega Potions.
After completing the quest, you’ll need to wait a bit before unlocking the next side quest in the series, “Samin’s Special Research Report,” which tasks you with tracking down a Sandstar.
