The Oathbound is a side quest in Valor Mortis, where you have to kill seven guards who are hidden throughout the chapters of the game. Each of these guards gives you an Emblem, which unlocks a secret room that comes later in the game. To begin this quest, all you have to do is kill any one Oathbound and get rewarded. In this guide, we’ll show you where to find all seven Oathbound guards and how to complete the quest.
The Oathbound Quest
The Oathbound quest requires you to kill 7 guards known as Oathbound. Each guard yields an Emblem that is necessary for accessing a secret room at a later point in the game. The quest begins once you kill your first Oathbound guard automatically regardless of what chapter you currently are in.
Valen Duroc
After obtaining your grapple hook skill, complete Chapter 2 first to get your first pistol in Valor Mortis. Then, start at Chapter 1’s Onslaught Arch lantern and get up on the broken bridge behind you. Get up on the platform on your left and use the grapple to get across.
Continue to go up and across until you reach the other end of the broken bridge. Go ahead and get across the second broken bridge this time. Follow along the dirt path and keep going straight ahead. Keep an eye on your left, as you will spot the bright red bulb that you need to shoot, which will give you access to the Oathbound guard here.
Lucien Lafontaine
For the second Oathbound, start at the Demolished Path lantern in Chapter 2. You will find a ladder on your left that can be used to get up. Go up and jump off the ledge on your left towards the platform below. Continue to jump across until you reach a large broken carriage and the Oathbound nearby. Beat the guard and get Lucien Lafontaine’s Emblem and Perfectionism amber.
Etienne Vauclair
It is best to complete Chapter 5 first and unlock the Nephtoglobin platform traversal ability before coming back to Chapter 4 to find the Oathbound. Make your way to the Fields lantern in Chapter 4 and continue straight through the wooden archway. Go past the wooden gates and go left to find some platforms that can be activated and extended at the side of the mountain wall.
Get inside the window of the wooden house on the right and continue forward. Jump and grapple across until you reach the cave. Go down to the lower platform and shoot the red glowing sphere to make the path ahead accessible. With your grapple, get to the other side. There will be a chest guarded by the Oathbound. Kill the guard and receive the Emblem of Etienne Vauclair.
Jean Pierre Polnaire
Start from the Old Mine lantern in Chapter 4 and find the flight of stairs nearby. Go to the lever, and wait for the moving crate to reach the level of the lower wooden platform. Use the Stasis Transmutation skill to freeze the cog.
After that, jump on the crate, unfreeze the cog, and raise yourself up to the second platform. Knock down the ladder from the platform to make a shortcut. Continue your way around the corner, kill the guard, and get the Emblem of Jean Pierre Polnaire and Perfectionism amber.
Severin Suse
Begin at the Village Church lantern in Chapter 6. Go straight ahead while sticking to your left and avoid the swamp. Once you reach the first house on your right go towards it and walk behind it. Continue straight past the house ahead, then look to your left. Kill the Oathbound to get Severin Suse’s Emblem.
Adrien Casell
Before you start this task, it is recommended to complete Chapter 9 and unlock the Shield Transmutation ability from the University. Then, travel to the Shamble Street lantern in Chapter 8. Go around and take the stairs down and go past the broken carriage and the dead horse.
Enter the tunnel on your left and continue straight ahead into the gas area. Use the Shield ability to protect yourself here and enter the passage on your left. Go right through the park area until you find some crates on your right. Get on it and jump across the wall to find the Oathbound. Kill the guard and take Adrien Casell’s Emblem.
Bastien Beaufort
The final Oathbound is found within the Fortress in Chapter 9. Go to the Courtyard Lantern and take the passage leading to the corridor. Proceed through the corridor until you meet with Bastien Beaufort.
He is a tough guard, so prepare yourself accordingly. After defeating Bastien Beaufort, search for his emblem, which is known as Bastien Beaufort’s Emblem. Collecting all seven Emblems will automatically create the Mysterious Stone Slab, which is required for The Oathbound.
How to Complete The Oathbound Quest in Valor Mortis
Once you collect all seven Emblems and receive the Mysterious Stone Slab, you can just turn around after fighting the last Outbound guard. Go through the hallway and find the symbol at the end of the passage.
Then use the Mysterious Stone Slab on the symbol to open the secret passage. Go inside and read the note on the table to finish The Oathbound quest. You’ll also get the We Wear the Same Colors achievement.
Before leaving, make sure to open all four chests in the room. They contain the following rewards:
- Empty Ferrofluid Flask
- Sands of Time x3
- Remnant’s Return x3
- Quintessential Blade Material
Collecting all seven Emblems in Valor Mortis and opening the secret room will complete the quest and reward you with several useful items.
