A Mage’s Staff Quest Guide Oblivion Remastered

In Oblivion Remastered, A Mage’s Staff, is the first big mission you will embark on once you have reached the rank of Apprentice. From battling Necromancers in hidden caverns to choosing the magical ability your staff will have. In this guide, we will guide you through every step of the quest so that you can get your staff and advance through the ranks of the Guild with ease.

A Mage’s Staff Quest

Your first task as an Apprentice of the Mages Guild is to obtain your own magical staff. To begin, go and talk to Raminus Polus in the Arcane University. He’ll tell you to go to Wellspring Cave, which can be found northeast of the Imperial City. Upon arriving, you’re meant to greet either Elette or Zahrasha.

As soon as you enter the cave, you will be ambushed by a group of Necromancers. Fortunately, they’re not very resilient; they don’t have much health or armor. It’s advisable to ignore whatever creatures they can summon and simply focus on eliminating the Necromancers themselves. Once you fight them, make sure to explore the area properly. You’ll see Zahrasha’s corpse beside a bedroll, and your journal will get updated, encouraging you to investigate further.

Finding the Unfinished Staff

Search the Necromancers’ bodies to find a key. Use it to unlock the door at the end of the cave, which leads back outside. You’ll end up on an island in the lake surrounding the Imperial City, and right in the middle of another battle with even more Necromancers. Defeat them, then search the tomb at the center of the island to find the Unfinished Staff.

With your staff in hand, head back to the Arcane University and report to Raminus Polus. He will instruct you to head to the Chironasium, which is within the courtyard. Delmar is waiting for you there, and he will create your staff out of the incomplete one you just acquired. Delmar will first request that you decide what school of magic your staff should be expert at.

Choosing the Right Magic for Your Staff

If you choose Destruction, you can opt for fire, frost, or lightning damage. Lightning is usually the best option because it’s strong, steady damage against nearly all enemies. If you choose Illusion, your staff may inflict Charm, Paralyze, or Silence, with Paralyze being particularly deadly against a very broad range of foes. Last, if you choose Mysticism, you will have options such as Soul Trap, Telekinesis, or Dispel. Soul Trap is far and away the most useful option here.

After you make your choice, Delmar will instruct you to come back after 24 hours to collect your finished staff. Later on, if you go and talk to Raminus Polus once more and request promotion, he’ll promote you to the rank of Journeyman.
