In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the continent holds Nevrons and strong enemies, but there is one more obscure foe to combat: mimes. These weird oversized automated mimics, at first, seem almost invincible since all your attacks, free aim shots, and abilities are utterly ineffective against their seemingly indestructible barrier.
Damaging mimes requires “breaking” their defenses first with certain break damage-inducing skills like Gustave’s Overcharge. They can be attacked the ordinary way once the barrier is breached, defeated, and loot can be gained from them. This guide will help you track all discovered mime locations in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and the rewards granted by each.
Mime Battle Strategy
There is a pattern to the mime battle. At first, the mimes conjure an invisible shield, making them hard to hurt. To defeat the mimes, the first thing you must learn is to break their shield. Once the shield is broken, their resistance will, for all intents and purposes, vanish, so you can go in for the deathly blows and end the fight.
Using skills that have the “Break” potential as much as possible as the “Can Break” moves, or equipping the Pictos and Luminas that enhance the damage inflicted by Breaks, is preferable. The two types of attacks a mime has are his hand-to-hand attack and his almost invisible hammer, with which he deals damage to the party.
It’s easy to remember combos with their limited move sets. Take the hand-to-hand combo, it’s two punches and a headbutt. You can use parries and counters easily as well. However, nobody likes it when they use the strange combo, so it is wise to just dodge… timing does the trick here. Parrying attacks does huge “Break” damage, so if you’re confident enough to fight, go ahead!
Mime Location 1: Lumière
Reward: Lumière Music Record.
While exploring Lumière with Sophie, you’ll eventually reach the harbor. Instead of going down the stairs, glance to your right to spot a stage with some dancers. Head toward the stage, then look right and walk straight ahead. In the distance, you’ll see a Mime. Interact with him to initiate the battle.
Mime Location 2: Spring Meadows
Rewards: Baguette Outfit and Haircut for Gustave.
When you reach the Expedition Flag in Grand Meadow, head left if you’re facing the flag. You’ll encounter a monster along the way, and just after that, there will be a grappling point. Continue forward, using two more grappling spots, and eventually, you’ll spot the Mime in the distance.
Mime Location 3: Flying Waters
Rewards: Short Haircut for Maelle and a Colour of Lumina behind it.
While exploring Flying Waters, you’ll notice a large Nevron in the distance. Continue forward and you’ll find some climbing holds. To the left of them, there will be a patch of algae. Move toward it to cross over and reach another climb. Climb up, and at the top, you’ll find the Mime. The nearest flag to this Mime is Lumièran Streets in Flying Waters.
Mime Location 4: Ancient Sanctuary
Rewards: Baguette Outfit and Haircut for Lune.
From the Sanctuary Maze rest point in the Ancient Sanctuary, head towards the large bell in the distance. When you reach an intersection, take a right and enter the area where you’ll need to crouch. You’ll come across two paths—take the left one to reach an open area. Continue straight, passing a wooden shack, and at the far end, you’ll find the Mime.
Mime Location 5: Esquie’s Nest
Rewards: Baguette Outfit and Haircut for Sciel.
After using Gustave’s shame-inducing password to pass the entrance to Esquie’s Nest, walk straight through the first tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel, look to your right to find a Mime below. Jump down and defeat him.
Mime Location 6: Yellow Harvest
Reward: Braid Haircut for Maelle.
Yellow Harvest is an overworld area that becomes accessible after acquiring Esquie. Once inside, climb the wall using the grip points and continue on your path. Eventually, you’ll come across the Expedition Flag for Harvester’s Hollow, which will serve as your main reference. Walk straight until you reach an open field, then follow the path to the right.
You’ll pass by two Nevrons. Near the second one, you’ll find a Journal. A little further along, there will be a crevice you can crouch through. The Mime is located on the other side of this passage.
Mime Location 7: Old Lumière
Reward: Braid Haircut for Sciel.
After completing the main event at Old Lumière, you’ll return to the overworld. Head back to the city right away, as new areas will now be accessible, including one that contains a Mime. Fast travel to Right Street from an Expedition Flag. This is the path you took when the group split, and you controlled Lune, Sciel, and Monoco. Follow it as you did before.
It’s a bit of a long walk, but keep going. You’ll pass the Fading Man and eventually reach the large hairy giant with a sword for a bobby pin, marking the point when the game switched to playing with Verso and Maelle. Continue past a few Nevrons and climb up some climbing holds. After ascending, you’ll find the Mime in the upper area.
Mime Location 8 & 9: The Continent
Rewards: Voluminous Haircut for Lune and Sciel.
Starting from the shore near Old Lumière’s back entrance, swim northwest to reach an island with reddish trees. On this island, you’ll encounter two Mimes. The battle plays out in the same way, but with two enemies instead. Defeat them to unlock two new haircuts.
Mime Location 10: Visages
Rewards: Baguette Outfit and Haircut for Verso.
In Visages, from the first flag you encounter, take the leftmost entrance, which will lead you into a face-shaped area covered in flowers.Continue until you reach the Joy Vale rest point. From there, head left. You might find a Journal along the way, but keep going straight until you reach a dead end. Look to your left, and you’ll spot a Mime. If you can’t see it, it’s cleverly hidden behind a tree, look closely, and you’ll find it.
Mime Location 11: Sirène
Reward: Sirène Haircut for Lune.
The main story will lead you to Sirène. Continue through the map as usual until you take a long elevator ride and reach the location shown in the first screenshot. Pass by the Fading Man, use the grapple once, then twice, and you’ll reach an intersection. Both paths will take you to the same destination.
On the lower floor, look for a room in the back left corner. Enter it to find the Mime. Alternatively, you can fast travel to the Sewing Atelier rest point and backtrack slightly.
Mime Location 12: Inside the Monolith
Reward: Voluminous Haircut for Maelle.
While progressing through the Inside The Monolith dungeon, you’ll enter the Tainted Cliffs area, which mirrors the Stony Wave Cliffs. Continue along the path until it splits in two. Take the left path to climb down a rope, where you’ll find a Mime accompanied by a Clair and an Obscur.
Mime Location 13: The Reacher
Rewards: Baguette Outfit and Haircut for Maelle.
In Act III, Esquie gains the ability to fly, unlocking access to many new zones, including The Reacher, located in the northwesternmost part of the overworld map.
It’s recommended to visit this area only after starting Maelle’s side quest to increase her relationship level from 5 to 6. As you move through The Reacher, you’ll eventually reach an Expedition Flag called Ladder Area. Continue on and look to your left to find a rope. The Mime will be located on the lower level.
Mime Location 14: Frozen Hearts
Reward: Short Haircut for Lune.
Head to Frozen Hearts, an optional area located to the east of Monoco’s Station. Keep climbing the mountains until you reach a section with frozen trains. The reference fast travel point is Iced Heart.
Climb the trains in front of you until you find two grappling spots. Take the left one to discover a Gestral Merchant. To the right of the merchant, you’ll find a Mime hiding in the shadows.
Mime Location 15: Flying Manor
Reward: Clea Haircut for Maelle.
Fly to the Flying Manor, situated northwest of the Forgotten Battlefield, nestled between mountains. Walk until you reach the Central Plaza flag. Head straight from the flag to take an elevator, then continue on your path until you spot a rope to climb down. On the lower floor, take the right path, climb another rope, and you’ll find the Mime waiting for you.
Mime Location 16: Sunless Cliffs
Rewards: Bald Haircut for every character who wins the fight and The One Picto.
This is the Masters of Mimes, the toughest Mime battle in the game. You can find them in the Sunless Cliffs by flying south from Sirène’s location with Esquie. Once inside, head straight, then turn right until you reach an Expedition Flag. Next to it, you’ll find a swirling portal that triggers a 1v1 fight against the Mime.
The battle with this Mime is challenging. While their attacks are predictable and follow the usual pattern, the fight can be lengthy. It’s recommended to break the Mime as quickly as possible. Winning for the first time will earn you a Picto called “The One,” and defeating the Mime with each character will reward them with a bald “haircut” outfit.
