The Long Road Home is the first main quest after finishing the prologue in Of Ash and Steel. In this quest, you will find many NPCs that will either help you or disturb you. There are no maps to provide directions. So, to reach the quest area, use the road signs and NPCs’ guidance to find your way. Try to avoid all the fights and carry lots of water and food to survive the journey. In this guide, we will walk you through the Long Road Home Quest in Of Ash and Steel.
The Long Road Home Quest

The Long Road Home is the main quest you start after the prologue. After helping Nerest in his house, he will tell you to go towards the Gretshaft and continue the journey. Follow the main road to find a large statue at the intersection. Since the map is not available now, use the signs to find your way towards Grayshaft.
During your journey towards the Grayshaft, you will find a lot of side quests. Complete these quests to gain experience points and rewards. If you want, ignore the quests and go directly towards the Grayshaft.
To find the road towards the Grayshaft, head in the direction of Woodcutter’s Camp. Talk to a man standing near the camp to get a key. Use the key to open the house nearby. Inside, you will find the Woodcutter’s Outfit. Wear the outfit to get a bit of defence, if you don’t have any dress till now.
Before reaching the gates of the Grayshaft, you will meet a trader/ healer. You can sell all your items to him to earn some gold coins. You can also give him some gold coins to heal yourself. He will also sell some basic-level weapons and food. As this is a long journey, you will need food and water to survive it.
How to Enter the Grayshaft

At the entrance of the Grayshaft city, you will be asked to give 200 gold coins. If you want, you can give the gold coins to the soldiers, or you can just ignore them. However, if you don’t give them the gold coins, they will get furious and will try to kill you. When they attack you, defend them or run towards the main gate and enter the city. By doing this, you can enter the city without spending any gold coins.
How to Reach the Harbour

As you enter Grayshaft city, an NPC named Theo will help you to go towards the harbour, but he will charge 20 gold coins. You can give him the gold coins before the journey or after reaching the harbour. It is important to take his help, as without the map it is very difficult to reach the harbour. Try to reach the harbour area in the morning, as at night time you will not be able to see the inn.
How to Find Carrera the Sailor

The inn is on the left side, facing the water. Find Helmut inside the Harbour Authority building. He will tell you that all the ships in the harbour will sail after six months. So, you have to wait for six months to get a ship towards your home. He will tell you that Carrera can help you.
Carrera is standing near the corner of the building, drinking wine. He will tell you that he can take you home on this ship, but you have to pay him 5000 gold coins. Tristan will be upset that he doesn’t have that much money. So, Carrera will tell him to wait for six months or give 5000 gold coins as soon as possible.
Meet Irvin the Saviour

With no other choice, Tristan went outside the building to find someone waiting for him named Vard. This person will tell you that he is from the Order, and he will guide you towards the base. Follow Vard to reach a dead end. Vard will reveal that he is here to kill you. Now, another person, Irvin, will come to save you by killing Vard.
Irvin will tell you that Vard is an imposter and has come to kill you, as someone has sent an assassin for Tristan. Irvin then tells you to ask for protection from the Order or the Free Hunters. This will complete the quest. After completing the quest, you will be rewarded with 700 experience points, and you will unlock the next quest, “Friends In High Places”.
