In the “An Untimely End” quest in Avowed, players face a crucial decision regarding Ygwulf’s fate. He reveals his motives for the attempted assassination, claiming he seeks justice for the people of Paradis against the brutal Steel Garrote, an Aedyran military group. He also interprets a mysterious dream he experienced concerning the player, taking it to be a sign of ill fate. The player is left to make a challenging decision: execute Ygwulf, with gains but risking the ire of rebels, or pardon him, maybe lessening the strife to come but disapplying authority. This guide will explore the consequences of each decision, helping players determine the best course of action.
Should You Kill or Spare Ygwulf in An Untimely End Quest
Towards the end of the “An Untimely End” quest, you’ll have to decide what to do with Ygwulf. Before you make your choice, he’ll explain why he was trying to assassinate you. He claims he’s trying to avenge the people of Paradis, who suffered greatly at the hands of the Steel Garrote, a group of Aedyran soldiers led by the Inquisitor.
Ygwulf also tells you he had a strange dream about you. In the dream, you were standing under the Aedyran sign, with your feet turning into tree roots that wrapped around adra. He interpreted this dream as a sign that you’re a bad omen and need to be killed. Now it’s up to you to decide whether to spare Ygwulf’s life or end it.
Should You Kill Ygwulf in An Untimely End Quest
Choosing to kill Ygwulf has some tempting rewards, but also some serious consequences. You’ll get his key to leave the passage and the powerful Blackwing Armor, a great find for stealth archers (no judgment, I see you!). This armor boosts your stealth attack damage range and your crouched movement speed.
However, killing Ygwulf will make you a target for the rebels. They’ll ambush you in the streets of Paradis on your way back to the Aedyran embassy. You’ll have to fight them off. After that, they’ll mostly leave you alone, but they will take one final, brutal revenge: you’ll find Garryck, the person who rescued you from the shipwreck and helped you through the beginning of the game, murdered with a note on his body specifically for you. The rebels will give you one last warning when you reach Emerald Stair, but after that, they’ll back down, and you can even interact with them peacefully.
Should You Spare Ygwulf in An Untimely End Quest
If you choose to spare Ygwulf by apologizing for the Steel Garrote and telling him to leave with his people, he’ll be grateful and give you some adra and 625 currency as a thank you. When you return to Ambassador Falscen Hylgardback in Paradis, you have a choice: you can lie and say Ygwulf escaped, or you can tell the truth and admit you let him go. Either way, the Ambassador will be furious and give you a long lecture about your mistake. To make matters worse, Inquisitor Lodwyn will show up and express his disapproval. Eventually, though, everyone accepts the situation, and you can move on to the next mission.
As you leave Paradis, a member of Ygwulf’s group will give you a note. It’s a message to all the rebels saying that you, the Envoy, are not their enemy and should never be attacked. Later on, during the Food Theft quest in Emerald Stair, you’ll discover that Ygwulf’s people, desperate for food, stole the crops from the farmers. If you spared Ygwulf earlier and can convince his followers, they’ll give the crops back without a fight. You might encounter some resistance from a few rebels as you leave, but their leader will step in to help you.
