In Avowed, the Dawntreader quest offers gamers one of the most ethically challenging decisions in the game: whether to help the Oracle Sargamis with his cryptic experiment. Taking place in the heart of the Eothasian Temple, this side quest combines exploration, puzzle-solving, and heavy combat, all culminating in a critical decision that can turn the story on its head. As you learn the truth about the fate of the Aedyran Expedition Team and the Oracle’s true motives, you have to choose whether to help him bring back Eothas, trick him into sacrificing himself, or kill him. Every decision has weight, providing you with distinct consequences that determine your path through Avowed.
Should You Help the Oracle
At the start of the Dawntreader quest in Avowed, things are fairly straightforward. You will begin in the northern part of Dawnshore, near Pilgrim’s Path. To get there, head north from the northwestern edge of Paradis. You can follow the river on the western side and then cut inland when you reach the area marked Strangleroot on the map. As you climb the hill, you will run into a group of Xaurips blocking a narrow rock corridor. Take them down and continue forward.
Not long after, you will come across two NPCs, Kauia and Seegwin, blocking your way. Speak with them and choose the dialogue options: “I’d like to see this temple for myself.” followed by “Don’t make me pull rank on you.” This will convince them to let you enter the Eothasian Temple, officially kicking off the Dawntreader quest. Your objective from here is to track down the Aedyran Expedition Team.
Here’s a table for the Dialogue Option:
NPC | Dialogue Option | Player Intent | Effect |
Kauia & Seegwin | “I’d like to see this temple for myself.” | Show interest in the temple | Advances the conversation |
Kauia & Seegwin | “Don’t make me pull rank on you.” | Assert authority | Grants access to the Eothasian Temple |
The “Dawntreader” side quest
The “Dawntreader” side quest in Avowed offers players a significant moral decision that affects the narrative. In Dawnshore, players must explore the Eothasian Temple, complete puzzles, and fight enemies to reach the Oracle Sargamis. The Oracle asks for assistance in recovering the Splinter of Eothas, a potent artifact, but his motives are suspicious. After finding the Aedyran Expedition Team’s bodies, players learn that Sargamis employed their essence in his experiment to revive Eothas. This then prompts a deciding factor: save the Oracle or kill him.
Should you Help the Oracle
If you decide to go along with the Oracle’s (Sargamis) plan to revive the God, place the Splinter of Eothas into the statue and activate the quest-marked switch. The statue will start coming to life… but then it stops. The Oracle explains that it needs a ‘chime’—which, unfortunately, means your life—to power up. If you agree, you’ll have to stand under an Animancy device that promptly kills you. You’ll respawn, but now you have an optional objective to defeat the Oracle. At this point, there’s no way to leave peacefully—Sargamis will attack you no matter what. In the end, it turns out helping the Oracle bring back Eothas just isn’t possible.
Should you Kill the Oracle
If you refuse to help the Oracle, you’ll have to fight and kill him. Make sure to loot his body afterward to get his sword, Last Light of Day. It comes with two enchantments: Golden Sun’s Ascent, which restores 3% of your max health whenever you defeat an enemy, and Dawn’s Remembrance, which adds +10% bonus fire damage to your attacks.
Afterward, The Voice will reach out to you, asking you to communicate through the nearby Adra. When you do, it will request that you place the Splinter of Eothas in the statue to “join soul into body.” If you go through with it—just like you did for the Oracle—the statue will successfully come to life this time.
The Voice will then speak again, expressing gratitude and saying something like:
“One day, when we are free, we could return here. Dwell in this body. Feel the earth again. But it is a sprout. Fragile. It must sleep here undisturbed. A secret you could keep.”
At this point, it asks if it can inhabit the statue, and you have two choices:
- “The statue is yours.” (Allow The Voice to take it.)
- “Everything about this statue is wrong. I have to destroy it.”
You can also ask a few questions before making your decision. If you agree to give the statue to The Voice, it will thank you and say it needs time to consider its next steps.
