In Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ “The Tea Ceremony,” the player must make a key choice that will put their powers of observation and deduction to the test. Following a beautifully choreographed tea ceremony, Naoe finds out that among the guests who have been camouflaged by a veneer of refinement is the elusive Golden Teppo mercenary. The discovery compels players to make a choice between confronting Otama or Wakasa, two ladies who have caught Naoe’s attention. Though the selection seems to have direct repercussions, the story will eventually push Naoe to a conflict in Osaka no matter who is blamed first. The critical scene brings out the importance of player freedom within a fixed narrative with alternate routes leading to the same climax.
Should You Confront Otama or Wakasa in The Tea Ceremony
The choice to confront either Otama or Wakasa comes near the end of the Sakai arc. Before reaching this point, players must meet various NPCs and learn the proper etiquette for participating in a tea ceremony. Once these tasks are completed and the ceremony concludes, Naoe realizes that one of the women in attendance is actually the Golden Teppo mercenary.
At this stage, players must decide who to confront Otama or Wakasa. Having spoken to all three women at the Assassin’s Creed Shadows tea ceremony, Naoe narrows her suspicions down to these two. While the best option is to confront Wakasa, as she is indeed the Golden Teppo, the choice ultimately doesn’t change the final outcome.
Should You Confront Otama in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
If the members choose to pursue Otama, Naoe will track her down and kill her in the street. Raiding her corpse, they will discover a letter to Wakasa, which says that Wakasa is the real Golden Teppo. When this is discovered, Naoe will target Osaka Castle, looking to exact revenge. As it turns out, Otama was corrupt as well so apparently, Naoe’s impulsive street execution is justified.
Should You Confront Wakasa in Assassin’s Creed Shadows
If the players attack Wakasa, she willingly confesses to being the Golden Teppo and tells Naoe to depart from Sakai before she can no longer do so. When Wakasa leaves, Naoe vows to find her in Osaka and tear out her heart. Strangely enough, Wakasa seems to have completely forgotten that she personally invited Naoe to visit her in Osaka before the tea ceremony, because when Naoe shows up later, Wakasa looks genuinely surprised.
