In The Outer Worlds 2, the “Save the Hostages” mission comes as an optional mission in the course of the main storyline quest “On the Trail of the Traitor.” To rescue the hostages, you will have to solve an orb puzzle in the Research Wing. This walkthrough will guide you through each step of the puzzle to release the hostages.
Save The Hostages Orb Puzzle
You will find the save the hostages orb puzzle in Golden Ridge. While doing the “On the Trail of the Traitor” main quest, you will get an optional task to rescue the hostages. Start by getting the Research Wing key from the cellar, then head upstairs to where the puzzle is located. You will run into some enemies along the way; defeat them to move ahead. Look for arrows painted on the walls that point you toward the puzzle’s location.
Save The Hostages Orb Puzzle Solution
You will see an orb on a railing with a floor plate in front of it. To solve the Save The Hostages Orb Puzzle, step on the plate to move the block that’s keeping the orb from rolling forward. Follow the arrows and step on the first platform to clear the first block, then use the platforms on the left to keep the orb rolling along its path.
Next, jump down the nearby hole to reach the courtyard. Look up and shoot the barricades blocking the orb’s path. After it stops for the third time, go to the console nearby and release the platform so the orb can continue.
It will eventually drop into a crack. Step on the platform next to it to raise it up, allowing the orb to move forward again. Do this one more time for the next platform, and the orb will finally drop into a hole, activating the keypunch mechanical safe.
You will receive an Auto-Pneumatic Keypunch Activation Keycard and Pinnacle Perfume Kilo. Finally, leave the puzzle room and use the Activation Keycard on the console to free the hostages, completing this optional objective.
