Choosing the right starter Pokémon in Pokémon Legends Z-A is an important decision, as you are going to spend most of the time with it. Each of the starters has its own skills and playing style. In this guide, we will tell you their Mega Evolutions, stats and abilities to let you pick the one who is the best for you and your way of playing.
Best Starter Pokémon to Pick
Going for the right starter in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is important as you will spend most of your journey with it. We will look at all three Johto starters, Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig, and their Mega Evolutions to help you decide which one suits your playstyle best.
Meganium

Meganium is a tank. With a great Defense and Special Defense of 115, the Pokémon can take up a lot of damage. It is even the fastest among the three starters, although it may not be a huge deal in this game since battle speed determines how long you have to wait to use your next attack. This is what gives Meganium the combo of being a tough fighter and also fast at the same time.
Mega Meganium
It turns into Grass/Fairy and thus, gets a lot of resistances (Fighting, Ground, Water, Grass, Electric, and Dark) alongside being totally immune to Dragon moves.
On the downside, this makes it very weak against Poison-types. Additionally, it has to compete with other Fairy Pokémon. However, Meganium is still a very good choice for those players who like to use the defense and strategy as a playstyle.
Feraligatr

Feraligatr is a monster, with a 160 Attack stat, it is the most powerful physical attacker out of the three. Feraligatr is also well-defended with 125 Defense and a good setup moves like Agility, Swords Dance, and Dragon Dance that allow it to increase Speed and defeat other teams.
Mega Feraligatr
When it Mega Evolves, Feraligatr is Water/Dragon, which provides it with excellent coverage. Its moves are Ice Fang, Crunch, Aqua Break, Earthquake, and Rock Slide, and it’s helpful in most battles.
Its Speed is average, so it requires Agility or Dragon Dance to remain quick. It’s also weak against Dragon and Fairy attacks. Nevertheless, Aligatueur is a brilliant all-rounder if you prefer powerful, simple offense.
Emboar

Emboar is a mixed attacker that’s strong in both physical and special moves. It also has good HP for decent staying power. When it Mega Evolves, it becomes Fire/Fighting, gaining resistances to Steel, Fire, Grass, Ice, Dark, and a 4× resistance to Bug moves. Emboar learns Flame Charge early, which increases Speed, a huge advantage since Speed affects combat flow. Emboar performs well against around 60% of the known Pokédex, giving it an edge in most fights.
It’s the slowest starter and has lower Defense, making it fragile against strong physical hits. It’s weak to Flying, Ground, Water, and Psychic attacks, and faces competition from other strong Fire/Fighting types.
Mega Emboar
Tepig’s final form, Emboar, is a Fire and Fighting type, which means it’s especially vulnerable to attacks from Water, Ground, Flying, and Psychic types. If you start with Tepig, it will first evolve into Pignite when it reaches level 17, and then grow into Emboar at level 36, which is the usual level for its final evolution.
Pokémon | Best For |
Meganium | Defensive and strategic players |
Feraligatr | Raw power and balanced stats |
Emboar | Offense, Speed boosts, and amazing Mega design |
At the end of the day, the best starter is the one you enjoy using. Pokémon games aren’t meant to be difficult, they’re about the bond with your partner. But if you wanted to know who’s the strongest overall, Emboar takes the crown.
