Within The Outer Worlds 2, the “On the Trail of the Traitor” main quest will have you travel to the N-Ray Range, where you’re searching for Victor Clemens. You’ll come across a puzzle that features some switches and an electrical notice, which you’ll need to figure out before you can move along any further.
This is a step-by-step guide to reach the N-Ray Scanner and complete the switch puzzle.
N-Ray Range Switch Puzzle Solution in The Outer Worlds 2

After you acquire the N-Ray Scanner, it’s easy to complete the switch puzzle. You have to put the switches in the given order:
- Second Row – First Switch
- First Row – Second Switch
- Second Row – Fourth Switch
This order activates the correct circuit and powers up the next section of the N-Ray Range.
Where to Find the N-Ray Scanner in The Outer Worlds 2

The N-Ray Scanner is hidden inside the N-Ray Range, but you’ll need to find a back way in since the main entrance is sealed.
Begin at the front entrance and proceed to the smaller building to the right. Within, there is a hatch in the floor—your point of entry into the N-Ray Range.
Drop down through the hatch, leave the first room through the left-hand door, and turn left to find a purplishly lit hallway. A vent is present here, leading directly into the switch puzzle room.
Above the switches, you’ll notice an Electrical System Notice that says no more than three switches can be active at once, or the system resets. You’ll need the N-Ray Scanner to identify which ones are connected.
Before solving the puzzle, exit the room and head right from the purple lights. You’ll find Exemplar Foxworth nearby. Talking to them is optional but recommended since it unlocks the “Discrete Mathematics” side quest.
Enter from Foxworth’s room through the vent on the wall opposite. Inside, do not get hit by the spinning purple electricity by running straight when it spins against you. Fall down at the end of the vent, turn left, and proceed through a half-opened shutter door. Turn to the right to reach a room where there is the N-Ray Scanner on a table.
It will allow you to call upon concealed wiring, enemy silhouettes, and other such information beyond the eyes—just what you need for the next puzzle.
Solving the Switch Puzzle with the N-Ray Scanner

Go back to the switch puzzle room with your scanner in hand. Scan the wires; you’ll find that only one series connects three switches in a group.
Flip those three switches together, in the sequence above, to activate the circuit. This will open the door to the new section and allow you to proceed with your mission to locate Victor Clemens.
(Tip: As you finish this section, you may also initiate Aza Leitinger’s side quest. Take notice of any new objectives or dialogue that become visible when you are traveling between the N-Ray Range.)
