In Oblivion Remastered, The Wayward Knight quest takes you to Cheydinhal, where an Oblivion Gate threatens the city. Team up with Farwil Indarys to close the gate, but keeping him alive is key to unlocking the best rewards. This guide walks you through the entire quest, from activation to final battle, with tips to ensure a successful outcome.
How to Begin “The Wayward Knight” Quest in Oblivion Remastered

To get started with the “Wayward Knight” questline, you’ll first need to complete the Dagon Shrine quest. After that, you will have to make your way to Cheydinhal, which is exactly at the east of the Imperial City. Enter the town through the West Gate, and strike up a conversation with one of the city guards. Ask about the town, and eventually, they’ll mention a troubling development—an Oblivion Gate has opened just outside the walls. That’s your cue—the quest officially begins.
Entering the Oblivion Gate

Leave Cheydinhal the same way you came in—through the west exit—and follow the quest marker until you reach the portal. A guard stationed there will fill you in: Farwil Indarys, the Count’s son and heir, has already entered the gate with a plan to shut it down. Your next task is to follow him in and help him finish what he started.
Inside the Gate: What to Expect

Once you’re through the portal, you’ll need to battle through hostile creatures and explore the path laid out ahead. Along the way, you’ll spot bodies of Knights of the Thorn—loot what you can from them. Continue on into an area called The Bowels, and from there, you’ll enter the core of this Oblivion realm. Eventually, you’ll find Farwil himself. After a quick conversation, the two of you will press forward to take the tower by force.
Keep Farwil Alive!

If you’re aiming for the best rewards and want to join the Knights of the Thorn, Farwil must survive. Letting him die changes how the quest ends and what you receive. If things go badly and he’s killed, be sure to grab his signet ring—you’ll need it to report back to his father and finish the quest.
Climbing the Tower and Closing the Gate
The final stage involves navigating the tower and dealing with more enemies. Make sure to take the lead and eliminate threats before Farwil charges in—he’s not exactly cautious. Support him and his fellow knight with Restoration spells that use the “Heal on Touch” or “Heal on Target” effects (like Convalescence) to keep them in the fight.
Once you reach the top floor—known as the Sigillum Sanguis—climb up the strange bone-like structures and interact with the Sigil Stone to close the gate. Doing so will bring everyone back to the real world.
Rewards: What You Get Depends on Farwil’s Fate
Your outcome at the end of “The Wayward Knight” quest depends entirely on whether Farwil makes it out alive or not:
If Farwil Dies:
- You receive 400 gold.
- Additional gear includes the Indarys Signet Ring, an enchanted medallion, a Knights of the Thorn shield, plus a full set of steel armor and a sword.
If Farwil Survives:
- You’ll be welcomed into the Knights of the Thorn as an honorary member.
- Count Indarys will reward you with either the Thornblade or the Staff of Indarys, both powerful unique items.
