KCD2 Beyond the Grave Guide

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, the “Beyond the Grave” quest offers a chance to delve into the darker side of Kuttenberg. After completing “Feast for the Poor,” a shady character named Rat in the Hole in the Wall tavern tasks you with a morally questionable mission: stealing a seal from a deceased mine owner. This mission entails traveling through the Sedletz Monastery, interacting with its residents, and eventually using theft to recover the important seal. Get ready for some graveyard raiding and clever social dynamics as you tread through the mystery and intrigue of this fascinating mission.

How to Start the Beyond the Grave quest

After you’ve wrapped up the “Feast for the Poor” quest, head to the Hole in the Wall tavern in Kuttenberg and chat with Rat. She’s got a job for you: pilfering a seal from a deceased mine owner. Your first stop? The Sedletz Monastery, which you’ll find northeast of Kuttenberg. Good luck!

Talk to Morticius

You’ve got a couple of options here. You could try asking Brother Morticius for a hand. He’s usually hanging around the graves outside the monastery, praying. If you haven’t met him before, he’ll probably ask you to do a little something for him first – a side quest called “Thou art but dust…” You don’t have to do it to get the seal, but it does take you down into the crypt, which is where you need to go anyway, so you could kill two birds with one stone.

To get to the crypt, look for a trap door in the middle of the chapel floor. Head down, go through the south door, and you’ll find a brick wall. The middle section is loose – interact with it to open a hidden passage. Climb through, and you’ll find the tomb. Take a peek inside, but don’t get your hopes up – the seal isn’t there.

Seal Location

So, you’re at a crossroads. You can either try to rob the monastery gravedigger directly, or you can snoop around his house hoping to find the seal. Here’s the thing: the gravedigger keeps the seal on him at all times. It’s never in his house. So, pickpocketing is your only real option.

If you’re thinking about breaking into his place, be warned: he’s got a seriously tough lock on his door at night. Unless you’re a master lockpicker, you’re better off trying to lift the seal from him during the day. Once you’ve got it, high-tail it back to the tavern and hand it over to Rat to finish the job.

Tips

  • While talking to Morticius isn’t strictly required, it gives you a legitimate reason to be in the crypt, which can be helpful if you’re spotted. Consider doing his “Thou art but dust…” quest alongside this one to maximize your time.
Trying to break into the gravedigger’s house at night is risky. The lock is very difficult, and getting caught trespassing at night has severe consequences. Stick to pickpocketing during the day.
  • Don’t rush the pickpocket attempt. Wait for the right moment when the gravedigger is alone and not facing you. Crouching and moving slowly can also help.
  • Make sure you have enough lockpicks if you decide to try and get into the gravedigger’s house, although it’s not recommended.
  • Stealing has consequences in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Be mindful of your reputation and how it might affect your interactions with other NPCs.
