How to Use Engines for Boats in The Last Caretaker

Navigating the waters in The Last Caretaker is largely dependent on your skill of using and managing the boat. Your boat is more than just transportation; it becomes the base-camp, storage compartment, and lifeline while doing your exploration in the waters. This guide provides instructions on how to pilot your boat and how to operate both engines smoothly to ensure a hassle free and uneventful journey.

    Getting Behind the Wheel

The boat you start with in The Last Caretaker is more than just a ride from one place to another. It’s your hub, your shelter, and the only way you’ll be moving across the waters.

To take control of the boat, head up to the bridge and interact with the wheel. Once you’re there, you’ll be able to adjust your speed and steer.

The bridge also serves as your main dashboard for keeping an eye on the boat’s overall condition. From here, you’ll be able to see how damaged the vessel currently is, check the remaining battery charge, and monitor the amount of diesel stored in the tank.

Whenever you pull up to a spot worth exploring, make sure to drop anchor. Hit the yellow anchor button on the console to set the boat in place.

    How to Use the Engines

The boat runs with two separate engines, each one with a different fuel source and purpose:

    • Left side: Yellow Diesel Engine – burns diesel
    • Right side: Blue Electric Engine – runs on stored power

You don’t have to keep both engines active all the time. Turning one off helps preserve either fuel or battery power, and the boat will still move as long as one is running. If you want to travel at full speed, though, you’ll need both engines operating together and properly fueled.

Each engine’s output depends on the cylinders you install on top of them. Better-grade cylinders give you a faster boat. These cylinder recipes—and their improved versions, unlock through the Skills menu as you progress.
