How to Sneak Attack in Monster Hunter Wilds

Mastering sneak attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds can give you a powerful edge in battle. By catching a monster off guard, you can deal massive damage right from the start, quickly build up weapon-specific resources, and even create Wounds that weaken your target. In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know about executing successful sneak attacks, from proper positioning to strategic timing, so you can dominate the hunt like a true predator.

How to Sneak Attack

Sneak attacks in Monster Hunter Wilds are a strong initiative to initiate battle, catching the monster off its guard right from the beginning. Getting one would put you on top by doling out enormous damage immediately, allowing you to accumulate weapon-specified resources that way quickly, and even creating Wounds depending on your good fortune.

To execute a sneak attack, carefully approach a monster while crouched with your weapon sheathed. If the creature hasn’t seen you and you’re within range, a prompt will be on your screen. When it appears, press F on PC, B on Xbox, or Circle on PlayStation to attack and set yourself up for an early win.

When to Perform a Sneak Attack

There are two major instances when you can sneak attack a monster in Monster Hunter Wilds. The first is when a fight starts and the monster has not yet realized that you are present. To accomplish this, observe its movement pattern and line of sight with caution. Sneak up while it is not paying attention towards you and utilize cover to remain hidden if it turns back around towards you. Timing and position are everything when ensuring that you remain stealthy.

The second opportunity comes after the monster has taken heavy damage and decides to flee to another location. Once it settles in its new spot, it will lose aggro, giving you a chance to sneak up and strike again, just like at the start of the fight. However, if you follow too closely while riding a Seikret as the monster is escaping, it will remain aware of you, preventing another sneak attack.

The Importance of Sneak Attacks in Battle

Once the tutorial phase is over in Monster Hunter Wilds, battles against large monsters become much more challenging. To succeed, players must not only master their chosen weapon but also learn how monsters behave. One of the best ways to gain an early advantage in a fight is by using sneak attacks.

These powerful opening moves can immediately put the monster on the defensive, help players build up their weapon-specific resources, and even inflict Wounds if they’re lucky. Additionally, landing a successful sneak attack is the only way to earn the Hunter-Assassin trophy.

Staying Hidden for a Successful Attack

To do a sneak attack, players need to move towards a monster crouched down with their weapon holstered. If the monster is not aware and the player is close enough, a prompt will be shown, indicating the chance to attack. Press F on PC, B on Xbox, or Circle on PlayStation to carry out the attack.

Sneak attacks can be performed at two key moments: at the start of a fight when the monster hasn’t noticed you, or after it has taken significant damage and fled to a new location. However, following too closely while riding a Seikret will keep the monster alert, preventing another sneak attack. To remain hidden, players can crouch to minimize noise, use tall grass and bushes for cover, or equip a Ghillie Mantle for temporary invisibility.
