How to Open the Fairfield Jail Armory in The Outer Worlds 2

To break into the Fairfield Jail armory in The Outer Worlds 2 might appear daunting at first glance. The door is locked up, with hopeful troopers guarding it, and typically requires some good Lockpicking or Explosives skills. But don’t worry — there’s a secret entrance that doesn’t need any special perks or tools.

Whether you’re there for the loot or just curious about what Auntie’s soldiers were drooling over, here’s how to get in and what’s waiting inside.

How to Get into the Fairfield Jail Armory

The direct route is through the front door, but it requires some skill investment. You’ll need Lockpicking 3 (and one Magpick) or Explosives 3 (no Magpick needed) to open the armory from the inside. If you’ve got those, you’re in.

You can also get some interesting dialogue if you possess Lockpicking two or Explosives 2 when you speak with Trooper Kemp, but it won’t suffice on its own to get you through the door.

If you lack both skills, there’s an easy solution:

  • Exit the jail and turn to the right towards the bounty terminal next to the entrance.
  • Find the scaffolding that runs along the wall. Head up top and jump onto the jail’s roof.
  • On the roof, you’ll see an opening centered above the armory locked behind a door.
  • Drop through the hole and land inside the room — no skill, no tools, no hassle.

Once you’re in there, loot as you wish. The Auntie’s Choice troopers may sound tough about requisitioning the gear, but they won’t care if you take it all.

Alternate approach: If you talk to Warden Sterling, the inmate in the cell next to the armory, and possess Speech 2, he’ll inform you of the same roof entrance. You don’t even need to chat with him, however — the vent is open either direction.

What’s in the Fairfield Jail Armory

The armory doesn’t hold mythical “miracle gear” like the guards talk about, but it’s still a decent early-game find. Here, you’ll discover:

  • Defensive Plate Armor Mod
  • Bandolier Uniform Armor
  • Infantry Cap (slows down toxicity accumulation when using an inhaler)
  • Shotgun shells and short rounds
  • Shock Rods (for weapon modification)
  • Shock Machine Gun

The Shock Machine Gun is particularly convenient to use against Automechs, which you’ll find repeatedly — especially if you charge in guns blazing at the Automech Factory or the Vox Relay Station. It’s also a good choice for taking care of local wildlife such as Raptidons and Crabbles on Paradise Island.

If you do not want to keep the equipment, you can always offload it at any vending machine or retail kiosk for a neat little profit.

Bonus: Persuading the Troopers for Extra Money

Depending on your Speech or Leadership skills, you can even get a few extra bits out of the Auntie’s Choice troopers patrolling the region.

Players with Speech 2 or Leadership 2 can persuade them to part with some coin, though other dialogue checks might work depending on your build.

Definitely, while the loot isn’t game-breaking, the Shock Machine Gun and mod parts make it worth your time — especially if you’re still mid-tier in your progression or prepping for tougher Automech zones later on.

And because the roof line doesn’t cost you anything but a brief ascent, there really is no excuse not to drop in.
