In Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s “For Whom the Bells Tolls” quest, Henry finds himself in a precarious situation: his friend Hans faces execution. To earn his freedom and potentially save Hans, Henry must first complete tasks within the castle walls. This guide outlines the steps needed to reach Thomas, who is being held within the castle, a journey that requires stealth and cunning to navigate the heavily guarded area. From hauling coal for the blacksmith to using distractions and careful movement, this walkthrough will help you reach Thomas and advance the quest.
How to Start the Whom the Bells Tolls Quest
Henry’s just been released from prison, but his friend Hans is about to be executed. To make amends for his past misdeeds, Henry’s given a chance to earn his freedom, and this work is also his ticket into the castle. His first task: lug three sacks of coal to the coal shed for the blacksmith. The coal shed’s located just past the main gate, up the hill on the left.
Once he’s done hauling coal, Henry needs to chat with the blacksmith, who’s hanging out with a guard south of the coal shed. Henry’s smart – he knows he needs the blacksmith’s help to get into the forgery deeper inside the castle. So, he offers to help the blacksmith out. The blacksmith needs a horseshoe made for Kabat in the stables. Now, you could actually make the horseshoe, but if you’re in a hurry, you can skip that step and head straight for the chapel where they’re holding Thomas. Getting to Thomas is going to require some stealth – going in with all guns blazing against the entire castle isn’t the smartest move.
How to Get to Thomas
Okay, so you’ve made it into the forging area. Head left, towards the stone steps. You’ll see a courtyard with two doors and a guard posted at one of them. Instead of going that way, look for a wooden staircase on your right, just past those stone steps. This whole area is crawling with guards, so remember to crouch and move slowly and carefully.
Take the stairs up and around to the right. They’ll lead you down a hallway towards a green door. Go through it, and then through the door on the right side of that room. Make sure to close the doors behind you – it’ll help you avoid being spotted. In the next room, you’ll see another green door and an open door at the back. Take the open door and the staircase to the next level. Here, you’ll find a guard blocking the way to the next staircase. Time for a little trick: crouch down and throw a rock to distract him. He’ll go investigate the noise, giving you a chance to dash up the stairs. Keep climbing the spiraling staircase until you reach the very top of the tower. That’s where you’ll find Thomas, sick and feverish, along with his sister.
