How to Get Challenge Horn & General Velgar Boss Fight Strategy in Runescape Dragonwilds

If you’re aiming to take on the formidable General Velgar in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, your first step is securing the Challenge Horn, a key item that unlocks the boss fight. But getting this horn isn’t simple. This guide will walk you through the entire process, from finding the recipe to collecting the necessary items, and finally, how to take down Velgar once you’re ready for the fight.

How to Get Challenge Horn

To face the General boss fight in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, you will first need an important item: the Challenge Horn. You’ll need to craft it yourself.

Start by heading to the bridge near the boss arena, marked on the map above. There, you will find a ghost NPC who holds the key to your journey. Talking to them will unlock the recipe for the Challenge Horn. Once you have the blueprint, collect the necessary materials: five Bronze Bars, one Dragon Tooth, and one Bloodwood Sap.

The Bronze Bars are relatively simple to acquire. The trickier parts are gathering the Bloodwood Sap and Dragon Tooth. To get these, you’ll need an Iron Pickaxe and an Iron Logging Axe. Begin by crafting the Iron Logging Axe. For that, you’ll need Iron Bars, easily found in the Stormtouched Headlands, and some Hard Leather, which you can make by tanning Adhesive Leather at a tannery and upgrading it.

Next, prepare yourself for the toxic environment of the Bloodblight Swamp. You’ll need a Weak Anti-Poison Potion, which is brewed using Harlander, Bittercat Mushroom, and a clay vessel. Once the potion is ready, head into the swamp and use your Iron Axe to chop Blightwood. These rotten trees are scattered throughout the area, but the sap you’re after is guarded by high-level enemies near a large tree by a castle.

You only need one unit of Bloodwood Sap, so grab it quickly and retreat if needed. Now that you have the sap, it’s time to get the Dragon Tooth. Equip your Iron Pickaxe and head to the Stormtouched Highlands. You’ll need to locate a dragon-shaped rock formation with four prominent teeth.

General Velgar Boss Fight Strategy

With all your materials in hand, head to an anvil and craft the Challenge Horn. Once forged, it’ll appear in your Key Items slot. You only need one, and with it, you’re officially ready to challenge the boss and prove your strength in battle. If you manage to defeat Velgar, you’ll be rewarded with Velgar’s Head.

Pre-Fight Preparation

  • Armor: If you’re low on defense, you’ll need to rely heavily on positioning and dodging.
  • Supplies: Bring plenty of stamina and health-restoring items. Poison resistance or cleansing items are highly recommended.

Phase 1

  • Opening Move: Velgar attacks quickly – don’t jump unless absolutely necessary. The arena gives little room for error.
  • Center Yourself: Try to stay in the middle of the arena. Edges are typically where the poison starts.
  • Watch for Poison: Even if it doesn’t look like you’re in poison, your bar might say otherwise. Trust the UI.

Phase 2

  • Two Hits: Land two solid hits, then back off to regain stamina. This is critical.
  • Roll Timing: Good rolls save runs. Bad ones stack poison and stamina loss.
  • Face Down Mechanics: When Velgar does the “face down” move, brace for a big AoE or poison cloud.

Phase 3

  • Dodge Chains: Dodge, dodge, dodge. Especially when Velgar starts chaining attacks.
  • Stamina Watch: Never burn all your stamina. Always leave enough to roll out of danger.
  • Poison Drain: If your bar is slowing up, step back and wait it out. Don’t risk standing in poison zones just to get damage in.

Final Phase

  • He Takes Flight: This is when Velgar usually flies up and tries to nuke the arena. It’s a high-pressure moment, but you’ve got this.
  • Last Stand: Even when out of supplies, keep your spacing and react to his patterns. One good dodge can be the difference between death and victory.
  • Stay Alive: Sometimes, it’s better to focus on surviving than squeezing in damage.

Don’t rush. If you get poisoned or cornered, step back, heal up, and reset your positioning. Remember to stay sharp; Velgar’s last attack almost always catches players off guard. Dodge it, then finish the fight.
