How to Freeze Water in Avowed

One of the most intriguing mechanics in Avowed’s magic system is the ability to influence the environment based on the elemental type of the spells cast. Ice Magic, in particular, has a unique interaction that lets players solve specific puzzles and access hidden loot that would otherwise be out of reach.

This guide will teach players how to use Ice Spells to freeze water in Avowed and unlock certain locations on the map that require this trick.

Method to Freezing Water in Avowed

As is clear, players can create ice platforms by casting an ice elemental spell at a target area on the water’s surface. However, certain prerequisites must be fulfilled for this to work. Players will need: a wand, a grimoire containing Ice Spells, and sufficient Essence to cast the spell.

One of the main reasons all Avowed players should carry a grimoire is the ability to use it to freeze water and reach platforms that would otherwise be inaccessible. There are many grimoires in the game, each offering more powerful tiers of ice magic. With that in mind, the mechanic of using an Ice Spell to create ice bridges and platforms is quite simple. Wands on the other hand are used to channel magic in Avowed.

Here’s a list of all the spells that can activate this mechanic and freeze water into a usable platform:

  • Chill Blades (Level 1 Spell)
  • Blast of Frost (Level 8 Spell)
  • Freezing Pillar (Level 18 Spell)

Players need to select an Ice-type spell from their grimoire, aim at the body of water they wish to freeze, and cast the spell. The ice block will last for a few seconds, giving players enough time to jump to ledges or platforms to collect treasures, hidden gear, or materials for weapon upgrades at the Workbench.

As a reminder, casting spells consumes Essence, so ensure you have enough before starting to create bridges. Keep in mind that magic cannot be cast while swimming, so players must be standing on solid ground to use this technique. Make sure to cross quickly, as players can fall into the water once the platform disappears. If this happens, they’ll need to return to the land and create another ice platform to continue crossing. This design is easy to recognise, and players should keep it in mind to uncover hidden loot.

Note: Additionally, the Eye of Rymrgard grenade produces a similar freezing effect on water and can serve as an alternative for players who are out of Essence or do not have a grimoire with them.

Best Grimoire to Use For Freezing Water in Avowed

Although there are several grimoires in the game, each offering more powerful tiers of ice magic, it’s recommended to use the simplest one: Chill Blades. This basic Level 1 spell hurls a volley of ice shards at the target. In addition to consuming the least mana, it is also the easiest to use for creating platforms to hop across since other bigger spells like Blast of Frost can be hard to land in the right spot.

Ultimately, this spell is excellent for improving exploration, as it allows access to hard-to-reach areas and puzzles that often contain loot and treasures.
