In The Alters, one of the most difficult choices you’ll face involves Jan Miner, a hardworking Alter who ends up losing his arm. As you progress through the game, you’ll need to decide how to help him recover either by giving him a prosthetic arm or using an experimental serum that could regrow his real one. Each option has its own consequences. This guide will walk you through both choices and what happens after, so you can make the best decision for Jan.
Jan Miner Choice Guide – The Alters
If you decide to add the Jan Miner Alter to your team in The Alters, you’ll soon notice he’s dealing with some serious psychological issues. After a while, he’ll start asking for more medication to cope with intense phantom pain. He can manage for a little while, but eventually, things will get worse he may even have an accident. If you don’t step in, he could end up dying from one, no matter what job you give him.
As strange as it sounds, the best thing you can do is actually help him cut off his arm. Once that option becomes available, do it as soon as you can. But make sure you’ve built the Infirmary Module first, so he has a place to recover. If he doesn’t get proper medical care right away, the shock from the injury could kill him. if you ignore the issue for too long, Jan Miner might try to cut off his arm by himself which could end very badly.
Give Jan Miner The Serum Or Prosthetic Arm
At one point in the game, the miner loses his arm, and it’s up to you to decide how to help him. You can either give him a prosthetic arm or try an experimental serum that might help him grow a new one. As Jan Miner starts to recover, Jan Scientist will give you the option to research a Prosthetic Arm for him. But if you talk to Jan Technician, you’ll unlock another research path this one lets you create a special Serum that can help Jan grow a new arm. Once you’ve chosen your path, you’ll need to craft either the Prosthetic Arm or the Serum to complete the process.
Give Jan Miner The Serum
If you choose the serum, it eventually works he grows his arm back, and he’s happy. In fact, he’s so grateful that he insists on paying you back by working non-stop. He even demands to be assigned to a mine so he can “serve his purpose.” The problem is, he pushes himself way too hard and will literally work himself to death if you don’t step in. To save him, you’ll need to either have the shrink talk to him or put him in a Contemplation Room and hope he works through it on his own.
