For Whom the Bridge Tolls is one of the quests on Paradise Island in The Outer Worlds 2. The mission centres around the main bridge that connects the southern and northern halves of the island, a crossing point held tightly by the Protectorate. For Whom the Bridge Tolls
When you first arrive at Paradise Island, the main area in The Outer Worlds 2, you will soon realise the island is divided into two sections: the south and the north. The southern part is open for exploration right from the start, but you will not be able to reach the northern side. To reach it, you will have to cross the main bridge, which is controlled by the Protectorate.
To begin the quest, make your way to the bridge north of Fairfield. Stick to the main path leading up to it, stepping too far left or right will set off landmines. When you reach the bridge, you will meet Warden Weidtraut. She agrees, but only if you do something for her first. Your task is to track down two Protectorate traitors, Ida Routledge and the Warden’s cousin, Charlton, and bring them to her.
Finding Ida Routledge
Head to Spire Grove, southwest of Fairfield. If you have Engineering 3+, you can use an elevator to get there quickly. Once you arrive, you will see a worker named Jackson fall to his death, triggering a short event with trapped workers who need help fixing machinery. They will explain that Ida died by throwing herself into the machine’s gears, believing it was for the Protectorate’s cause. Look around the gears, and you will find Ida’s severed arm; that’s all the Warden needs as proof.
Tracking Down Charlton
Next, head to Westport, where you will find Charlton. You will discover his secret: he’s addicted to Purpleberry Munch, Crunch, and Bunch snacks. With a Speech skill of 3+, you can trick him into going to the bridge by claiming there’s a secret Purpleberry project waiting for him there.
Returning to the Warden
When you return to the bridge, you will see Charlton on his knees, about to be executed by the Warden. After that, hand over Ida’s arm to complete the quest. You will earn 2160 XP and gain the ability to cross the bridge freely.
