Kyle’s journey to become more powerful after he barely survives the hybrid infected in The Beast Within is carried on in the First Blood main quest. Olivia tasks him with taking down another Chimera, and although the quest itself isn’t long and is very linear, the difficulty lies in the boss fight against the agile abomination that is the Mist.
This walkthrough will bring you to the fight with haste, prepare you well, and bring you through the Mist without annoyance.
Proceed to the Transport Site
Your target is the wrecked Transport Site east of the Monastery. Instead of running the entire distance, hijack a nearby forest truck—this may well be your inaugural driving experience in the game. Vehicles are scattered around the map, and fuel is easy to come by scavenging wrecks.
When you arrive at the highway bridge crash site, clear out any zombies and search the dead guard in the truck. Olivia’s source was accurate: the Chimera transport was real, but the creature has escaped into the swamps.
Track Down the Chimera
Drop down into the water that is flooded and swim to the island that is close by. Utilize Survivor Sense to trace the bloody footprints and tracks of the Chimera. The path goes further into the swamp and concludes on an island shrouded in mist.
Prior to swimming over, get ready:
- Fix damaged weapons
- Stockpile healing items such as bandages
- Create explosives (Molotovs or grenades) for additional damage
This preparation is especially important if you’re playing solo, as the boss fight can drag out.
Defeat the Mist
Interacting with the corpse on the island triggers the ambush cutscene. The Mist resembles a wendigo-like nightmare—fast, agile, and relentless.
- The Mist’s Attacks
- Leaping pounces from elevated spots or off other zombies
- Spit attacks that can hit from range
- Claw swipes during close combat
Strategy
This battle is a question of patience. Two-handed heavy arms are slow, so lighter arms or range instruments make the fight easier. Watch the behavior of Mist—its jump has a long, visible animation, and you have the time to dodge it.
Clear nearby Biters early so they don’t distract you. In co-op, one player can bait the Mist while the other strikes when it’s grounded. Successfully chaining hits will also fill up your Beast Mode, which can be used to stunlock the Mist and melt the majority of its health bar instantly.
Keep moving, only attack when it’s safe to do so, and don’t blindly chase it—you’ll wear it down faster than you think.

Defeating the Mist and finishing the First Blood quest earns you:
- 5,000 XP
- 800 Old World Money
- Beast Points (use these immediately to unlock a new Beast Mode skill)
