The Chromatic Petank is a very rare, high speed boss found deep in the overworld of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and to get to it, you need Esquie’s flying ability. Read this guide for proper instructions on how to to find and defeat the Chromatic Petank.
Where to Find Chromatic Petank
Unlike the other Petanks that usually happen to appear in select story-related areas across the Continent, the Chromatic Petank is a bit of a rare case. It loves roaming around the overworld and is tucked away in the forests near the southeastern edge of the map. To get there, you will need to have Esquie’s power of flight ability. The closer landmarks to look for are the Gestral Beach and the Flying Casino that lie just to the northwest of the boss.
Herding the Boss into Battle
But to really fight the Chromatic Petank, you’ll first have to guide it over onto its special battle platform, which is also located in the overworld. The boss is quick on its feet so flying atop Esquie will keep you abreast. The lead is quite long—the first leg going south through water, then the land crossing, until finally, north along the narrow tip. The destination is a platform beneath a gigantic stone face.
As with other hard Petanks, make sure your team is ready to go before engaging in the battle. This one certainly will not go easy on you.
What to Expect in the Fight
The Chromatic Petank is no joke. It is one of the trickiest boss fights in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 so you’ll need to bring with you a top-level party. If you’re underpowered and you’re launching attacks on the boss, it will barely make a dent on the shell while it pounds your entire team with hits and horrible status effects.
Unlike some other Petanks, this one does not run once combat starts-however, it doesn’t mean that it’s a walk in the park. It summons two minions during combat, which are very annoying. These friends do not just attack, they defend themselves, and hit the party with long lasting status effects-unless you have the proper Pictos to take care of them. One effect to watch out for is Exhaust-if your entire party gets hit by it, things will get much harder.
Strategy Tips & Best Rewards
Speed is key here—both the boss and its minions move fast, so if your team can’t keep up, they’ll get several turns before you can even respond. There are two main ways to approach the fight:
- Take out the minions fast. They’ll flee after three turns, but if even one escapes, it explodes and heals the boss for around 300,000 HP. That can undo all the progress you’ve made.
- Go all-in on the boss. Focus on dishing out as much damage as possible, as fast as possible. Use offensive abilities, parry counters, and Pictos like Augmented Counter to maximize your output. Boost your speed too—it’ll help you stay ahead of the minions before they start causing chaos.
What You Get for Winning
If you manage to take down the Chromatic Petank, here’s what you’ll earn: 5 x Colour of Lumina, 2 x Grandiose Chroma Catalyst, Anti-Stun Pictos, and the Carneau Parfait achievement/trophy—a badge of honor for defeating one of the game’s toughest optional bosses.
